Men's Rugby Sevens Qualification to Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024

Quite the group for the final qualifier. Loving the depth in rugby sevens.

As much as I would like to see another upset it is hard to see :GBR or :RSA not winning the final spot.

This version of South Africa has no chance at the quota. IMO Great Britain is the heavy favorite right now.

For years, South Africa refused Olympic sports for teams qualified on continental or repechage sports.

If they win the men's repechage, they will sure revert that policy.

First Challenger last week in Dubaï. Less interesting than the women's competition regarding the Olympic qualification tournament, as the huge favorites will be South Africa or GB, but some notes worth keeping.

Apart from Mexico there is not much difference between all the teams, despite Kenya taking it in the end. Chile seems to have stepped up a bit, Germany still strong but still unable to wrap things up, as is HK.

The draw for the knockouts would set Spain vs GBR and Canada vs RSA for the 2 semi finals, if all others went to form etc. Spain are capable of pulling a shock for me against GBR.

Though still think that RSA will have too much for everyone else. GBR are seemingly getting worse year on year, which is pretty damning considering our resource advantage.

Just now, dodge said:

Don’t think any of them are guaranteed to win. 4 very flaky teams. Obviously GB are still heavy favourites

Several of these teams are good enough at their best they should already have qualified. They are here specifically because they are flakey. (The Irish, to be fair, are not flakey, hence they aren't here). The one that manages to contain its own flakiness best will probably win.

Sure. I wouldn’t be surprised to see either SA or GB win a medal, but it also wouldn’t be a surprise when one or both doesn’t qualify

Adding Singapore's results to the table

:GBR 3rd

:RSA 6th

:ESP 10th

:CAN 12th

Okay, I'm slightly less defeatist about :GBR after this weekend. They thumped both France and Australia, as well as being a botched pass away from beating Ireland in the SF.

I'm still worried about South Africa finding a way to win (too many actual rugby world cups have conditioned me to assume they'll *always* find a way) but I at least think GBR should be competitive.

Honestly, it's a shame both teams won't be in Paris. Partially their fault, partially the way the qualification system is set up.
