Summer Olympic Games 2020 Medal Count

I think it is quite interesting to compare the current medal table to the summer sports world championships medal table. Germany for example only „should“ have won 6 medals so far (instead of 10). Köhler in Womens 1500 free, dressage team and dressage individual repeated, but all other medals are new. On the other hand Trajdos (judo women’s -63 kg), table tennis mixed doubles and Vennekamp (women’s 25 m pistol) lost their medal.

Hoping for 4 german medals today:

Swimming men's 800 free, slalom canoeing women's C1 (Herzog), judo women's -78 kg (Wagner) and rowing men's lightweight double sculls.

Herzog and Wagner are the defending world champions, so anything less than gold would be a bit disappointing, although putting that kind of pressure on them is probably unfair. The german team in men's lightweight double sculls looked great so far, but realistically silver is the best possible outcome. Wellbrock wasn't a medal favorite before the heats, but he looked great and it would be disappointing if anyone other than Romanchuk would beat him (given that Paltrinieri seems to be off). Ovtcharov could also secure a medal by beating Ma Long, but obviously that won't happen. He got a bit unlucky with the draw, he usually performs much better against Fan Zhendong.

After yesterday's good results for us we are back on track for a solid Games. Both the 1-1-1 in fencing and the 0-0-1 in judo are great with our current teams, the swimmers on the other hand are somewhat disappointing in terms of medals, Kenderesi and Verrasztó were close to the podium and just missed out, hopefully the same thing won't happen with Kapás today. (And obviously Hosszú is the biggest disappointment of the Games for us, even if the signs were all there in the past year.) It's also sad to see that the shooting medal isn't happening for us, but we sort of got used to this in the last few Games.

The estimation of around 5 gold medals and around 15 total medals stll stands for us. Without Hosszú winning multiple gold medals, or having gold medal favorites in multiple sports like in London (gymnastics, athletics), the repeating of the 8 gold medals of London and Rio is still far from achievable, unless some of our medal contenders will have an amazing day in wrestling and/or pentathlon.

I am not sure if any nation ever had a worse day (compared to expectations) than Germany today:

Zeidler: Out in semifinals instead of gold

Wellbrock: No medal instead of gold

Herzog: From defending world champion to bronze

Wagner: From defending world champion to bronze

Ovtcharov: From possible gold (Fan Zhendong is his "favorite" chinese player) to bronze at best

Men's hockey: From possible medal to very likely elimination in group stage

Germany lost 2-4 medals today and 4 possible golds.

After 6 days, the results are pretty disappointing for :FRA because many expected medals were not won : VTT H & F, Triathlon H, Basketball 3x3 F, canoeing slalom, some individuals in fencing, Wiet-Henin in taekwondo...

And thanks Judo !

Above all, I feel like we didn't get any "surprising" medals, except maybe Canonne in Epée (but we were expected one of the other fencers to win it anyway). I mostly sad for our Shooting Federation that put a lot of effort these last years to improve in every disciplines, and the results are frustrating with 5 finalists but 0 podiums.

Team sports are not looking good either (except for Basketball H or Rugby F).

Moreover, as expected, Tennis and Swimming are two of the sports we had good results the last decade, but for these olympics, it's... well. It's the void. The federation leaders are incompetent anyway. I hope it will cause an electroshock for Paris 2024 (and I hope it will be the same for athletics or gymnastics).

So yeah, right now, not a good sign for Paris 2024. But again, it was expected, as there is almost no emulation nor budget increases to improve athlete performance.

I'm complaining, but 11 medals are still good news compared to many other countries, and I congratulate every french athletes of the team who are giving their best. :champion:

Agree, I would say 5-6 golds at most. W/ regards to swimming, the 4th places are the most disappointing (probably not only the fans, but also the athletes concerned). Hosszú is a different story: unfortunately she was one on the long list of sportspeople whose OG preparations were scr*ed up by Covid-19
