LOL, the Hungarian national sports newspaper went a bit insane and have this very hopeful projection for us on their front page today:

10 gold, 8 silver, 10 bronze

This will only happen if literally everything goes right for us. I am not sure what they are thinking by putting the bar impossibly high, especially when our NOC on the other hand put the bar really low at 13 medals.

10 golds? And probably 5 in fencing? I have no idea which sport is expected to bring Hungary the most medals but I'm gonna take a wild guess on fencing :p

It's Canoe Sprint. The only way there's a chance for 10 gold if we sweep women's kayak again and also win 1 or 2 in men's kayak.

Does the 10 gold include Hosszu for 2 or 3?

I don't know, I haven't bought the newspaper and the article isn't on their site. I imagine that they must count 2 gold medals for her, OR they are counting 2 for Milák and 1 for Kapás. Either way, this projection only works if they are projecting 3 or 4 gold medals in swimming and at least 4 in Canoe Sprint, which is technically plausible, but also the best case scenario.

And I would say that up to 8 gold and overall up to 20 medals it would be an optimistic, but still achievable goal. This is just madness from the only daily Hungarian sports newspaper, and sadly sets unrealistic expectations for many fans.

I don't know, I haven't bought the newspaper and the article isn't on their site. I imagine that they must count 2 gold medals for her, OR they are counting 2 for Milák and 1 for Kapás. Either way, this projection only works if they are projecting 3 or 4 gold medals in swimming and at least 4 in Canoe Sprint

Even though the Americans are slightly faster this year in 400IM, I still would not bet against her in that race.

For us, I don't look at predictions, but I saw today 1 forecast has US for 96 medals, another, the AP has 137.  I think 96 more likely.

    • Yep. Not sure if it was the NOC or the biathlon federation (I assume the latter) that put him in the Livigno training 'world' with a former Italian biathlete as coach, but they can definitely also be blamed:  almost everyone involved in that shitshow got the motivation just sucked out of them by the methods and shitty atmosphere until they either retired or changed country

    • Lots of injuries, including often just pure bad-luck stuff like a fall from a set of stairs, illness, and of course the Sochi tragedy in 2014: one of her biathlon friends, young Julia Pieper, killed herself with a biathlon rifle early during the Olympics (she wasn't on the team, but was a training partner of both Preuss and Dahlmeier). Obviously a hard hit, which led to terrible Olympics for Preuss, with a DNF, awful results in her other individual races and a relay where she was the first runner for Germany, but fell early on, got snow in her rifle and broke a pole and ended up losing almost 3 minutes, which in turn resulted in Germany being off the podium for the first time ever.   After that came all the injuries and illness and everything. So glad to finally see her have her big individual global gold, that is so well deserved.
