Summer Paralympic Games 2020

Recommended Posts

:BRA at the 2020 Paralympics

72 medals (tied Rio 2016)

7th place (tied London 2012)

22 golds (best ever, previously was London 2012 with 21)

:BRA at the 2020 Olympics

21 medals (best ever, previously was Rio 2016 with 19)

12th place (best ever, previously was Rio 2016 in 13th)

7 golds (tied Rio 2016)

So Brazil tied or surpassed every best performance ever, so I'm happy with Tokyo 2020 :)

Of course being higher or lower in the rankings don't always translate as a better or worse performance. Rankings can be deceiving, as Azerbaijan places 10th with only 19 medals (14 of those being gold) and France is only 14th with 54 medals (I'm sure they'll do fantastic in Paris). Compared to Rio, 8 NPCs continued in the top 10, with :GER and :POL out and :RPC and :AZE in. :JPN is the first host nation since :GRE in 2004 to not place in the top 10, but huge improvement compared to 2016 (no gold medals vs 13 golds now).

:ISR and :MEX improved a lot, and even though they won less medals than in 2016 (18 vs 16 now), the great number of golds have placed :HUN in the top 20 for the first time since the 80s. Biggest disappointment should be :KOR with their worst ranking ever (aside from their first participation where they didn't win any medals). Tokyo definitely wasn't good for them as they also had their worst ranking at the Olympics since the 70s.

7 medals is a pretty good number for us, but zero golds is a disappointing outcome. I think we had a couple of World Champions before COVID, so I would assume our athletes suffered more than some of the others.

Historic medal in taekwondo. First one outside of athletics, swimming and table tennis. One very good result in paratriathlon as well (5th).

What a fantastic edition of the Paralympic Games! It’s sad to see Tokyo 2020 come to close because I have throughly enjoyed both the Olympic and Paralympic Games this year. Unfortunately, I had to miss most of the second week of the Paralympics due to the start of a new semester at my university. I’ll definitely go back and watch what I missed at some point. Now, it’s time to reflect on this summer’s sporting action and prepare for what will hopefully be an equally great season of winter sports.

Yes, definitely  :d France achieved almost twice more medals than in Rio (54* vs 28) with a couple of extra golds on top of that. Best tally since 2004, first time since 1984 we gain more medals that the last Paralympic games. So yeah, whatever the rankings says :p

Although GB won fewer medals than 2016 they did set a new record for breadth with the medals spread across 18 of the 22 Paralympic sports. No country had previously exceeded 15.

    • I used to think Johnston(e) - from some place John build (aka stone for building something hehe).   I'm not familiar if Scottish or Irish clans are named after such clan founder or a place?
    • i'm triggered,legitimately thought kennedy 2.0 happened,just way more out of nowhere
    • Perfectly obvious.    Johnson = son of John Johnston or Johnstone = From St John's Town ie Perth in Scotland.
    • Nope. Azu missed out by 0.01. Bromell lost silver by 0.001!
