Speed Skating 2021 - 2022 Discussion Thread

I knew that former US speed skater - Silver in the Relay at Sochi - Eddie Alvarez had quit skating to play pro baseball.  Although he has mostly been in the minor leagues, he has had a few MLB starts.  Did not realise until just this minute that he is currently playing for the USA in the Tokyo Baseball Final!

Apparently a Chinese guy posted a 33.83 500m in Beijing (sea-level!) today (?)

Could be Gao Tingyu, but not sure. @Vic Liu Could that be the name listed in 1st there?

Just to clarify: 33.83 would be truly insane on a non-altitude track. Shinhama's 34.07 in Heerenveen is already considered an insane outlier...

Meanwhile, the Four Continents Championships got cancelled again. It was supposed to be held in Japan lol

I think this could be the final nail in the coffin of this event which took place only once in Wisconsin of all places.

It's Gao Tingyu. It's held in Urumqi with round 800m-1000m altitude, still a good result though.

Ah, that slightly refreshes the memory and also reminds me why this probably won't be missed a whole lot in terms of overall quality :p

Uuuugh just go back to having the events in separate weekends, as had been succesfully the case for many years:wall:

There is just no single valid reason for the nonsense that is combining these two events.

    • Yes, but what I mean for Serbia is that everything changed there (unfortunately for us ). 2022 was an unbelievable mess, that's not the case anymore now with just one athlete who has really gone for it and made it, so I'm 99% sure they'll accept it this time.   Who knows though. Plus there's always 1-2 bigger countries here or there who reject something, but it's not gonna be 16 places I'm afraid
    • Doping by Event Type When we look at which events have the most doping cases, a few categories stand out from recent sanction records: Long Distance (3,000m and above): 32% of cases Sprints (400m or less): 24% of cases Jumps: 12% of cases Javelin: 8% of cases Middle Distance (800m–1,500m): 8% of cases Hammer: 8% of cases Steeplechase (3,000m SC): 4% of cases
    • From 2020 to 2025    These three countries alone make up almost two-thirds (61.9%) of all current doping violations in athletics worldwide. It’s worth noting that 199 of World Athletics’ 214 member federations have no athletes on the current ban list. This means the problem is really concentrated in a small number of places. Here’s a look at the top countries: Rank Country Total Violations Percentage Region 1 Kenya 119 24.74% Africa 2 India 108 22.45% Asia 3 Russia 73 15.18% Europe 4 China 26 5.40% Asia 5 Turkey 20 4.16% Europe 6 Italy 18 3.74% Europe 7 South Africa 18 3.74% Africa 8 Ukraine 17 3.53% Europe 9 United States 16 3.33% North America 10 Morocco 15 3.12% Africa
