  1. well, it's an updated impression...nowadays, it's true that we have 6/7 Countries above the rest of the field, but Fencing has become one of the most balanced and well spread sports in the world, with a lot of Nations from every Continent (except for Oceania, but still) capable of winning a medal at any level. in the world cup thread we've done some kind of analysis about how many athletes from different Countries have made it to the podium at least once...and it's impressive, especially if compared with many of the most mediatically exposed disciplines (not to mention Winter sports). p.s. the vs 2-man show was staged in the cadet division just a couple of days ago...

  3. yes, with Russia out (and France & Italy in the top 4 overall) Poland are the strongest contenders for the European spot. You have to avoid early round eliminations when the OQP starts, but I think right now you're a better team than Hungary, Germany, Czech Republic (your main rivals).

  16. just looking at the final results... all 21 starters from the 5 top Countries () ended up in the top 23 positions of the final ranking... and the top 8 jumpers are from only 3 Countries: the only 2 "intruders" are Marusiak (17th) and Deschwanden (19th)... not exactly a sign of depth at the top of this game, I guess...
  17. and in California, Odermatt is back to the top of the rankings so far... it's a very close 1st run, with 12 skiers within 1.00 secs.

  22. without Russia, and totally dominated the field (5 gold medals each, 5 teams each one on the podium), giving very few satisfaction to the other Countries. among them, and were the only other Nations capable of taking a Gold medal home. however, a good number of Countries (12) have won at least a medal...a whole world apart if compared to the very small number of top tier Nations in many other sports...
