  1. Outstanding results overnight. The fact Rowing is blaming the Russians being there for not getting medals means they will probably keep funding as that will play very well with the founders.
  2. I wonder how many of the Rowing Men’s four will carry on to Paris - being condemned by the press is never a good place for a GB Athlete..
  3. Reluctant publicly but I am sure they had private ambitions. You can tell on the BBC Katherine Grainger was expecting the Men’s eight to be strong medal contenders rather than challenging for a bronze on a good race.
  4. The official GB Rowing response seems to be to be blame Russia. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/olympics/2021/07/29/russian-olympics-success-slammed-great-britain-lose-medals-tokyo/

  6. The Charley Davidson fight featured the BBC commentators moaning about the referee a few times during the third round if that counts.
  7. He is what is known as Anglo Indian I believe. There often have English names but have partial native Indian ancestry. James’s Guy dad was on TV yesterday and is visiably of Partial Indian ancestry. My mum’s school best friend was of a similar background.
  8. No women has repeated it since 1968. Paterson and Likuin didn’t even make the next games.
  9. Duplantis was lucky - he was due to meet up with Kendricks but didn’t only and it got cancels only hours before.
  10. GB Swimmer - James Guy - Grandad from from India. How do you insert a flag?
  11. Apparently GB rowing privately targeted four to six medals. With only one - and only two outside chances remaining for more- they seem to The big cut in funding Swimming got after 2012 brought a fantastic recovery for the team and a lot of people are already predating a big improvement in Paris but who knows - the internal problems look set to continue. Looking like GB women swimmers might fail to medal in a individual race for the first time since 2004 with only a few outside chances left - the best chance of two gb females getting a swimming medal is in the mixed relay.
  12. I think the Covid surge in Tokyo will end up seeing the Paralympics cancelled as I can see the Japanese Goverment choosing electoral survival over the rights of the Paralympians and pulling the plug.
  13. Good results for Mallory and Matthew in their events. I am feeling reasonably confident Athens and Sydney will be beaten (at least in terms of total medals) but I think all those fourth places have dented the chances of getting to 45 and especially 52 to beat Bejing even with Sailing, Boxing and Swimming and maybe Equestrian still in with a good chance of beating their Rio medal hauls.
  14. Appalling night overnight. Has anything significant gone GB’s way so far? Does not feel like it. The Target of 45 medals slips further and further away.
  15. Did someone in Gb curse the rowing gods? Five fourth places must be some sort of sad record for a games. Easy to see Paris and LA being worse through as I can see GB rowing getting a major shock when funding is reduced to well below what they thought was even the worse nightmare.
  16. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/57995446 Might be no Team GB in Paris due to funding cuts and tensions between the English, Scottish and Welsh governing boards.
  17. A very low scoring final - the winning score is wwell under 90 for the first time since the scoring changed. Back in 2016 the commentators in the UK were always going about how big it was for Max Whitlock to break 90 and how if Joe Frazier could get 88 he would be able to dream of a medal but in fact that would have secured one.
  18. If she had pulled out before appearing at the games then that could make sense - but pulling out mid team final because of that feels very unlikely.
  19. Duncan Scott looks exhausted after the relay and 200m. Doesn’t look like a medal contender really for GB.
  20. The build up to Athletics points more towards a rowing level of performance. Cycling is more unpredictable due to GB having a long history of only being at their best at the Olympics but their build up performance is related then that will be more like the Rowing as well.
  21. Maybe. I can see another two or three medals in Equestrian. A few in sailing. A few more in boxing. A few more in Swimming. Maybe one more in Diving. Canoeing a medal or two. Who knows with Gymnastics or Moden Pentathlon. Cycling maybe 3-5 if they saying they not hitting rock bottom. That will get past Athens and Atlanta but getting to 45 will be tough as Athletics could be embarrassing and the medals lost from Gymnastics, Athletics, rowing, tennis, and probably Rugby and Hockey combined effectively lowers from Rio to 45 anyway.
  22. Another fourth place. Rugby really needed that medal because the squad has no real support and qualification for Paris looks deeply uncertain. All these fourths must be worrying UK Sport because not getting 45 medals will put them in the firing line as it’s their target - cycling needs a good turn because Athletics will be poor (I can’t rule out a total medal shutout and gold less for the first time since Atlanta is the most likely outcome) and those two events will dominate week 2’s coverage so the narrative of the games in terms of broadcasting and perception might turn from British Success to British Failure.
