Speaking of the outdoor pool and the weather: I think the 2006 European Championships in Budapest was the last big international swimming event in an outdoor pool where a session had to be suspended due to a storm. I remember that the Hungarian Eurosport commentators had to use their own phones the next day to broadcast the event because the storm wrecked the commentator stand. They had to flee the stand live on air when the storm hit the pool.

  10. As expected, the domination in women's K4 is over. I expect only one Hungarian gold medal in the Olympic events, this new era won't be as successful for us as the previous cycles.
  11. No, it's not. If you use that logic pentathlon was already a "new sport" when they introduced laser run. It's not about which disciplines are in, It's about testing the skills of athletes in various disciplines, or more precisely, "to test the skills of a soldier". Being a good horse rider isn't exactly an important military skill anymore, so having the obstacle course instead of it is actually more in line with what the sport should be about. Therefore it's the same sport.
  12. I think UIPM did the right thing. Show jumping was always the worst part of modern pentathlon, a big clusterfuck, a lottery, and it was also too expensive. The obstacle course will very likely be more entertaining, more unique to the sport, while it also keeps pentathlon close to its military roots. As far as the modernization of the Modern Pentathlon goes, I think UIPM is doing a good job. They are on the right track with the combination of shooting and running, the 90 minutes long final and now the obstacle course. The issue is with the marketing, the fact that they are putting the events behind a paywall. Not the mention that the quality of the broadcast still seems subpar.
  13. Also, IOC should consider that their decision to throw out weightlifting and pentathlon can kill both sports. Boxing will be fine because, you know, it's boxing, the #1 combat sport in the world. But weightlifting and especially pentathlon needs the Games. The moment modern pentathlon is officially out for good, the sport will literally disappear and that will be the end of a discipline which was part of the Games since 1896. Legacy should matter. Weightlifting will probably survive in some capacity even if they aren't on the program but the sport will never be the same.
  14. I would throw Rugby Sevens out in favor of Cricket T20 if the best cricket players would come to the Olympics. I mean, Rugby at the Games seems like a cheap imitation of the "real thing". We obviously can't have normal Rugby at the Games due to the nature of the sport, so maybe it shouldn't be on the program at all. Is it popular / brings in the viewership? I don't think so. The novelty of seeing rugby played at the Games maybe lasted for one SOG. Maybe I am wrong but Cricket T20 seems more successful at being the shorter version of a Cricket than Rugby Sevens is at doing the same thing with Rugby. Which means that far more people would tune in to watch Cricket T20 at the Games than Rugby Sevens. Having both on the program permanently would kinda overkill as both are "British colonial team sports". Have both Cricket T20 and Rugby Sevens in Brisbane and decide based on the viewership / level of competition which of two should stay.
  15. The team has a lot of changes compared to Tokyo, none of the Olympic champion athletes from women's K4 boat are returning, so don't expect a gold medal in that event this time. Women's K4 will probably be v now that our team is young and Belarus isn't there. Bálint Kopasz is the only Hungarian Olympic champion from Tokyo who will be at this WCh. This WCh will be a great test before the Olympic qualification, we have to find out if we can move on to the next generation. As far as I know our junior results have been quite good over the years, but that doesn't guarantee success every time (*khm* women's handball *khm*)
  16. They really need to throw the fencing bonus round out of the final format, it's so incredibly boring. Just have the ranking round as usual and then leave the other three disciplines for the televised event. If you want some fencing for the televised part, just show a 5 minute highlight reel of the ranking round before riding. And I say this as someone who likes regular fencing a lot.

  19. Is there really no way to watch the World Championships free? That's really depressing... I get that they would put the World Cup behind a paywall, but the WCh should be available for everyone, especially when there aren't any TV channels broadcasting this live. Not even the Hungarian national sport channel, despite the fact that we are one of the nations who give a fuck about this sport. I am very curious about how this new final works, but at this rate I won't actually see it until the Olympic Games. Anyway, we got 4 Hungarians in the men's final, I am guessing that's really great performance from the Hungarian team.
  20. For the love of God, UEFA, how many times do I have to request to not let these Hungarian v Slovakian pairings happen in any international league? Is it really that hard to understand that this madness isn't worth it for both countries every time these matches happen?

  23. That's one very unexpected gold medal for us, which is also historic for Hungarian fencing. I hope Márton will come back for the next season, with her this team should easily qualify for Paris.
