  1. The continental representation (2023 World Surfing Games/Pan American Games) quotas now have higher priority than the 2024 World Surfing Games. Additionally the team events from the 2022 and 2024 World Surfing Games will award one quota (with 2024 having a higher priority over the 2022 games) and will give an opportunity for nations to qualify a third athlete.
  2. The sport was already on life support in Canada. The changes in qualification already negatively impacts us since there are so few world quotas now. Throw in the fact that other Pan American nations are increasing their quality and I wouldn't be surprised if Canada fails to qualify anyone in 2024.
  3. Quite happy with our final performances. Just need that little extra push and we could be looking at a good medal haul for 2024.
  4. I felt they should have made the two Division I groups with only 5 teams. Now when Russia and Belarus return there will be a massive shake-up unless the IIHF wants to pull a Slovakia and have them start from the bottom.
  5. Yeah, the bottom half of the bracket is quite open
  6. The difference here is the doesn't compete at the Commonwealth Games and doesn't compete internationally in gymnastics. It would be like not allowing swimmers to compete for at the Pacific Games despite being born there.
  7. Honestly shooting should be included and rhythmic gymnastics should be dropped. In fact, among the Olympic disciplines, rhythmic gymnastics is the least deserving discipline at the Commonwealth Games. Shooting on the other hand is behind rowing and sailing in terms of biggest Commonwealth snubs.
  8. I wonder what will happen to the boxing team. I know Northern Ireland jurisdiction is a bit complicated, but what's FIG's claim, that Northern Ireland is solely Great Britain, ignoring that the people are both Irish and British?
  9. Yeah, the gripe about shooting or weightlifting is a bit unfounded. The team and the snatch/C&J events were only there to inflate medals. I'd have the same feeling if they removed the individual apparatuses in rhythmic gymnastics. When I look at whether a sport/event should be part of the Commonwealth Games, I ask myself, "are there at least 8 competitive nations?" Admittedly, that helps Great Britain more since they are split at the games. England and Scotland are major players and Wales and Northern Ireland can add depth. Throw in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa who tend to have similar interests and it's not too difficult to find a couple of other nations to make the event competitive. Meanwhile for India (or other nations), if they don't have the support of the previously mentioned nations it will be hard to find enough nations to make the event viable.
  10. Yeah, I didn't have too much hope against Sweden...
  11. The IOC is trying really hard to get rid of eights. We'll probably lose one of the four person boats soon too.
  12. Ah yes, the youthful and hip sport of golf. I think the IOC needs to concede to either cut sports/events or increase the total number of athletes to around 12,000. That's how many athletes we needed once they made the (correct) decision to expand women's sports.

  18. Canoeing and sailing at least have the ability to be shrunk (and in canoeing's case able to drop slalom). Modern pentathlon can't shrink without disappearing.
  19. It's still impressive how three men dominated singles for so long. We've had 74 grand slam tournaments since Federer won his first (2003 Wimbledon) and the breakdown is... Nadal - 21 Djokovic - 20 Federer - 20 Everyone else - 13 between 9 players In the everyone else category, three of them happened during the first two years (2003-2005) and two happened in the last two years. Makes you think what could have been had the three not existed. Would Murray or Wawrinka have won double digit grand slams or would the winners been as varied as the women's (minus Serena Williams)
  20. Not sure, the IIHF essentially removed them and re-juggled Division 1. They also have to decide on how to handled the withdrawn teams in the lower divisions. The fairest thing would probably be to reintroduce them in Division 1A and for the withdrawn teams back to their old divisions, but Russia does have a lot of clout. We could see a scenario where 18 teams compete at the world champs and then either four get relegated or two get relegated, but none get promoted.
  21. Interesting, I always thought that if Russia stopped the invasion before the end of 2022 (probably more hopeful than realistic), they would be brought back for the 2023 sporting season in which case this decision would be a bit premature. If the other summer sports follow through with the same plan then it'll have a lot of implications for qualification to the 2024 Olympics.
  22. With two legs remaining here's what the relegation standings look like (bottom 2 get relegated) - 38 points - 37 points - 32 points - 31 points - 25 points Spain, Samoa and New Zealand can mathematically still be relegated, but it'll be highly unlikely. Things look pretty bad for Japan, they pretty much need to advance to the cup quarters in at least one event to have a chance. While on paper Kenya has a nice lead, their recent performances is a bit concerning. If they pick up 1 point in both of the legs things could be a bit tense for them.
  23. They were punching above their weight so I'm not too upset
