    Strange how we originally thought that only small nations with not much money would ignore the Worlds for the Europeans. Obviously, with 0 medals between them so far & have done the same thing. At least Germany have an excuse.

    I don't see magic shoes or magic tracks as being anything bad - it is a natural part of the development of the sport, we don't want to go back to the days of Roger Bannister running a four minute mile on cinder tracks.

    Successful athletics nations are built around sporting dynasties & coaching traditions. So Jamaica always has strong sprinters, Kenya strong middle-distance runners, the USA great 400m runners, Poland big muzhik heavy throwers etc etc. You don’t get consistent success with one good long jumper, one 4x100m team, one good hurdler.

    The only thing I can think of is that it gives you the right to have a car up at the head of the race, which can be handy. But the idea that the guy from the break is going to give your team leader 5km on the final climb…..don’t remember that ever happening recently.

    Once again the “send a man up the road to help later” theory is completely useless. Ineos sent van Baarle up the road early. The group with Thomas reaches him. Van Baarle falls away after 20 metres, contributes absolutely nothing, not so much as a bottle.

    Always one of the great moments in any TdF when the camera pans round from riders riding on the flat to the huge wall of rock that that they’re about to ride up.
