Day 1 of the 2024 Paralympics starts with a bang, with lots of GB competitors across a range of different sports.
The first watchable action will see Jack Shephard and Rachel Choong face the Indonesian reigning world champions of Subhan Subhan and Rina Marlina at 08:10 in the badminton mixed doubles SH6. The first guaranteed medal could come after the women's doubles WD14 quarterfinals at 09:45 which features 14 year old Bly Twomey and Felicity Pickard. Twomey faces a Paralympics baptism of fire with a potential 4 matches on the cards. 7 swimmers are in action from 8:30 in the heats, all of whom will be hoping to make it through to the evening finals session. GB are in action in 3 track cycling events, and have 2 reigning world champions hoping to add Paralympic titles to their CVs. Kadeena Cox could win the first finite medal at 14:45 in the women's C4-5 500m Time Trial, where she is the 2 time defending world champion. Boccia, badminton and table tennis matches keep the GB interest up through the day, and all 3 teams will begin their medal campaigns as well. Day 1 is rounded out by the swimming programme, where GB boast 2 world number 1's and World record holders as well as global medalists in all 4 events with GB entrants in the session.

GREAT news!
All of the matches for the Olympic Qualifier will be live-streamed on IIHF YouTube, free of charge!
https://youtube.com/@iihf?si=8z-RCFsnSOCqWmQy
For all non-competing countries at least, pretty sure it won’t be streamed for all, some probably have rights to their matches or the whole event through various broadcasters and streaming services.
Iesim Latvija !! (Šilovs & Bługers in particular)

Overall Predictions
Gold Medals
Sport Lower total Predicted total Upper total Archery 0 0 3 Athletics 5 10 20 Badminton 0 1 3 Boccia 0 2 4 Road Cycling 4 7 10 Track Cycling 5 6 11 Equestrian 0 2 5 Judo 0 1 3 Canoe Sprint 3 4 6 Triathlon 1 1 3 Powerlifting 0 0 0 Rowing 1 2 3 Shooting 0 0 0 Swimming 11 15 25 Table Tennis 0 1 8 Taekwondo 0 1 3 Basketball 0 1 1 Rugby 0 0 1 Fencing 0 0 6 Tennis 1 1 2 TOTAL 31 55 117 For context, the predicted result would be up 14 golds on Tokyo but down 9 on Rio, and would almost guarantee second on the medal table behind China. For context of how strong China is, they won 96 golds in Tokyo, so GB would need 82% hit rate on gold chances to beat them.
Total Medals
Sport Lower Total Predicted Total Upper Total Archery 0 2 4 Athletics 12 30 40 Badminton 0 3 5 Boccia 0 3 6 Road Cycling 5 12 20 Track Cycling 7 14 19 Equestrian 0 5 9 Judo 0 3 3 Canoeing 6 8 9 Triathlon 1 4 6 Powerlifting 0 1 2 Rowing 3 4 4 Shooting 0 0 3 Swimming 20 35 43 Table Tennis 0 5 13 Taekwondo 0 3 3 Basketball 0 1 2 Rugby 0 0 1 Fencing 0 2 10 Tennis 1 2 4 Total 55 137 206
From my predictions, it looks like GB will easily meet their medal target and potentially beat it. This result would be 13 more medals than Tokyo but 10 less than Rio, following the same trend as the gold medals.
There is a chance that GB will beat their Rio results but it will likely depend on the fine margins of sport.

Olympicsnell reacted to TeamGB in 2024 Paralympics Previews
With the opening ceremony of the 2024 paralympics just a week away, I thought I would give a sport by sport preview of the GB athletes competing and their medal chances.
Great Britain are sending 215 athletes in 19 sports and have been set a medal target of 100 - 140. For context, in Tokyo, they sent 227 athletes and won 124 medals, including 41 golds.

I believe His Majesty the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland will perhaps suggest mercy to His Majesty the King of Australia. His Mjaesty the King of Canada may wish to intercede at some point, I wonder if he has the other Kings' numbers...

Olympicsnell reacted to TeamGB in Track Cycling 2024 Discussion Thread
Yeah, the way I see it, is that he is equally proud to be British and Australian and was always intending to compete for both nations at some point in his career. I would assume that, given he has started dating Finucane , he thought he would speed up that process and hope to give himself a kickstart into the GB set up.

OR he has been planning this for a while, and was honest enough to race for australia at the olympics and win them a sack full of medals getting them a good return for their investment.
If you think team Australia didn't know that he had applied to switch to GB pre olympics then you should wise up.

That's utter madness. GB suddenly have 2 and 3 of the top sprinters alive, the dutch have 1 and 4...
Penny for the thoughts of cycling australia - actually don't need a penny, I've read them already, super giant huff!

Olympicsnell reacted to OlympicIRL in Your favorite positive 2024 Paris Olympics moments!
Not sure where to post this since I don't want to just stick it in the music thread, but I have to say I absolutely loved Eurosport's Paris 2024 theme, which they played throughout. This really added to my overall experiences and memories of the Games. It sounds very dramatic and menacing at times, in a good way, but just loved it

Olympicsnell reacted to mpjmcevoy in Team GB Debrief
Some events were much easier to listen to on BBC, for all their faults. Some were better on RTÉ! And some were better on Eurosport. While ina few, the Radio nearly was better than the telly.
In athletics, I like Cotter, Crammy and Jasmin, and Backley is pretty good too - I think Sawyers understanding of the Jumps is a real help to him, and I'd be disappointed if this doesn't end up her career after track is done - she has the knack. Merry on the radio is absolutely excellent.
In swimming, I preferred the two Andy's just. Triathlon, despite the screw ups is BBCall day long.
Diving is about 50/50 - Leon really brings great emotion and he clearly knows the sport, but the overall info is better on ES
Equestrian, much preferred ES, as I did with Canoe and rowing, Climbing and, oddly, Golf. BBC better for tennis.
Both BBC and ES are excellent on cycling, either was great.
All in all, Discovery+/Eurosport was a bargain, all things considered - obviously 2012 style BBC saturation fo free is better, but there are much worse propositions than D+
