Third gold for  at these games, in three different sports. Amazing.

The only two real blips so far were:
1. Men's R7, having Fiji on the rack to lose thanks to one misjudgement, uncharacteristic of the player. Otherwise they were good for silver IMHO. (France would have beaten them in the final.) 2. Liam Jegou's piece of ill luck, but his event is something of a lottery. However, a medal for either was not predicted, and Mona McSharry has more than compensated. All the big guns are still standing. So far so good.

Amazing, been watching Daniel coming through for years and it's all come together tonight, and arguably not even in his strongest event. This is what it's all about.🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪

Strong results in the rowing semis in Lucerne, with women's Pair and women's double sculls winning their semis, mens pair and womens lightweight double making their finals. O'Donovan/McCarthy worryingly beaten by the Swiss, as I've suspected since the Swiss cake on the scene last year, the Irish lads will have a real fight on their hands to retain gold in Paris. Start of their season slightly disrupted by missing Europeans and World Cup I (O'Donovan competed in the heavyweight single) so hopefully they can find their inner Corkness and power on as the season goes on, a chance to turn the tables in the final tomorrow.
 
At the boxing Olympic qualifier, wins for Sean Mari (51kg) on a split against 🇵🇰  and light-heavy Kelyn Cassidy against 🇩🇪, both progress to round of 32, still a long road to qualification and only 3 spots up for grabs in Cassidy's division.
 
At the swimming trials, Shane Ryan hit the OCT for the 100m freestyle this morning, needs to find another 0.21 to get the Olympic Selection Tine. Danielle Hill first Irish woman under 25 seconds for 50m freestyle in 24.95, 0.25 off OST, hopefully one or both can hit those times later.

Despite last night's 100m performance in the US being wind assisted I think Rhasidat Adeleke of  is now a serious threat for a medal at either 200m or 400m

Good start for new women's four in Varese. Sanita won her heat too.
 
Men's side didn't look as strong but they don't have to peak until July

Konan Pazzaia looked great in the M1x 4th fastest time overall and half a length down on the world silver medallist. If he can replicate that form through the regatta he will get picked over Colsh for FOQR and would be in contention to qualify. I probably wouldn't read that much into a heat result though and he does need to produce that form 3 more times this weekend. Brian Colsh didn't look very good at all despite being IRL1, maybe despite his physique the single just doesn't suit him, 3rd in his heat left him a little at the mercy of quarter finals draw but he seems to have gotten away with it although will need a better row this afternoon than he produced this morning just to make the semis. 
 
The Men's four did not look good at all and Germany, Switzerland, and Italy none of whom have qualified for the Olympics all looked great and were beating the Dutch and the Brits (First time the Brits have lost all Olympic cycle I think.). The one saving grace for the four is A. look new combination, Ronan Byrne new to sweep and B. terrible start and didn't lose that much time down the middle of the course but ye need to be beating Denmark and Ukraine tomorrow if they want any hope of qualifying for the Olympics. I know they are young and all but surely this four should be producing better results than it is. Lets see how they go tomorrow.
 
The men's pair apparently had quite a disrupted preparation with illness and injury so being off the pace of the British/ Swiss is not a disaster but they have a bit of work still to do just to make the final here, they should though. Wouldn't be at all worried about the double being well beaten by Italy, that was true early last year as well.
 
Yeah women's boats all looked great. Maybe Sanita ending her career with an Olympic medal is still on the cards (probably a bit premature but).
 
Only other thing I would mention is Canada opted to not field a women's four at FOQR and Germany who were 11th last year seem to be going for the eight so like its basically gauranteed to be us and Denmark that qualify. Poland is now the biggest threat but they are not a big one and if we can stay ahead of Denmark that won't even matter. But ye I would be thinking about the four in terms of can it get to being competitive in an Olympic final and not worrying much at all whether it will qualify.

I don't understand this decision but best of the luck to Grainne Walsh I guess. 
 
Heartbreaking end to her amateur career for Amy Broadhurst. One of our best ever female boxers and yet we never managed to get her to an Olympics. I'd fully expect her to go on to win a world title as a pro but its not the same as an Olympic medal.
 
On a more optimistic note, looks like Wexford boxing's media propaganda campaign over Dean Walsh has failed miserably.

It’s the point, as he was stating that Canada is so diverse in sports, with potential participation in 28 of 32 sports. That  is true, but also much easier to qualify in Americas. If Canada was in Europe you would not qualify in 28 sports.

Canoe Ireland Selection

I've a lot of updating to do on the qualification tracker! I am assuming I should go ahead and count the swim relay quotas for now and revise it if we don't qualify the requisite number of individual athletes to make up the relay squads. Would you all agree?
The women's medley relay squad already have 2 qualified athletes so they should be good anyway. I think the men's will be fine also but we might have to sweat it out to see if a couple of our guys will be high enough up the rankings to receive invitations in their individual events.

Just posting a slight update on my qualification projections from a few weeks ago before diving qualification starts as the hockey teams were kinding throwing the numbers of the probabilistic approach off. 139 would have been the 22nd largest team in Tokyo and with basically no Russia it might not be that unrealistic that our team size for Paris could be in the top 20.

both rugby 7 teams, one hockey team and within a spit of a second hockey team is unknown riches in team sports terms for Ireland, and absolutely wonderful, especially given the dominance here of non-Olympic team sports
