There is a solution for malaria - DDT spraying.  But rich modern countries have forced a ban on it because it kills birds.    So children in poor countries must die to protect birdlife.

Yeah, that doesn't surprise me. For rich modern countries animal life is more important than human life after all.

Tbf you are all talking about "Africa" like it's a giant monolithic state or something. There are vastly different realities in Morocco, South Africa, Somalia, Congo...

Malaria remains a common unsolved problem for the entire continent and there hasn't been a 1% response to it compared to COVID but of course COVID has impacted the rich modern world countries so it can't be ignored like a third world disease.

  3. @Olympian1010 90% of annual malaria deaths happen in Africa and that's counted in millions and you want support for building ice rinks there? In what kind of a world do you live in? :dunno:  Africa hasn't solved its health & water supply issues and you talk about ice rinks. Africa need fresh water to drink not to waste it for ice rinks.

Man, you sure speak from a rich country's perspective that doesn't have a clue about poor countries' problems.

No, I still fight for equal rights for all people. I don’t feel like I ever made the claim that equal rights was a solved issue. I fight for what’s right, and you fight/stand up for, well...nothing.

I will admit towards using Amazon’s services. It’s a hypocritical choice. I’m in the morally wrong here. I have to pick and chose battles.

I fight against hypocrisy & double standards all the time.

If you allow Amazon earn all that money, what's the point of calling Bezos disgustingly rich? :dunno:  Your dollars are making him rich after all. Yours and like half of the modern world!

Hmm, a tweet I saw last night was correct.

Critics will attack LeBron James no matter what.

I'm against all political boycotts so I actually support LeBron forcing the issue.

As for LeBron's ego, it's obvious at age 35 he wants to go out as #1 no matter what Leonard, Giannis or Doncic do elsewhere :p

I really hate sports involving politics. Quiting/boycott doesn't make any difference to the racism/world peace whatever. It just makes you feel good like a saint. As a professional player why not playing professionally and protest when you are off court. Doing harm to the struggling WTA/ATP and US open doesn't help the racism at all.

Especially when you consider Osaka was booed like crazy back in the USO final. Somehow the political crusade morons didn't consider that racist at all

Nah, it's a matter of waiting for a while, saying 'and now things really have to change' and then get back to playing eventually. Without anything actually changing, sadly.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. And it will come down to money since owners will sue over all these guaranteed millions for sitting on the couch. That shit ain't gonna fly for long. Hell, it won't fly until next season whatsover IMO.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see LA2028 reveal their logo(s) soon be the way. They have removed all the bid logos from their social media pages, and have posted a weird promotional video seeming to hint at a announcement coming sometime soon. Plus, their presentation the IOC at the General Session (which I read last week), talked about some branding milestones coming up too.

Given how everything is getting boycotted in the last few hours I don't expect the logo to be unveiled anytime soon.

Hell, I expect Los Angeles to cancel the Games alltogether to make a statement. That would be oh-so fitting in this politically-skewed era. Cancel Culture Rulezzzz :cheer:

Oh man, can you believe if the US Open is actually cancelled, because of this, after all the fuss about Covid measures they had for the past months. :d It's not happening of course, but imagine those 300 players depending on the Grand Slam check, after not playing for half a year. I am sure they are going to have a political stand too. :d

Serena Williams is still on the Margaret Court GS record chase. Cancelling USO would make her extremely upset IMO :p

Unlike MLB or NBA there is no guaranteed money in tennis. You make what you earn on the court (and you have to pay your trainers, medica staff etc.). That's why boycotting the season isn't really an option, it's an individual sport where you are truly on your own out there and let's face it, you can make a solid living if you're in the Top 100-150 and then it goes truly downhill if you are ranked outside 200. Then it's about earning every penny on the ITF 25k circuit. Making a political statement is cool but only if you can afford it. Otherwise reality bites you hard.

    maybe it's true...and also calling a strike in a factory doesn't change anything...

but a ballgame boycotted after another, a strike called every single day in every factory maybe could have an impact sooner or later...

it's always a little ball of snow rolling down the mountain that starts an avalanche...

    1 hour ago, Grassmarket said:

Indeed it will. Soon the factory goes out if business & all grievances are automatically resolved.

Yeah, sooner or later owners will demand the money back if there is zero play or let's say next season is in danger of being boycotted/cancelled too. In what business you are getting paid hundreds of millions of dollars for doing absolutely nothing?

Entertainment is a slippery ground, sports is one of the top branches there, you begin to feel the need for it once it's gone.

Btw, how many Hollywood TV shows or movies are getting cancelled due to BLM boycotts? My guess is ZERO? Go and figure. These Hollwyood actors are oh-so liberal and progressive but not when it comes to their own job. You ain't gonna hear Tom Cruise boycotting the Mission Impossible franchise anytime soon. Or Ben Affleck quitting the Batman job! :p

  11. Tennis is a rich man's sport. No way they will cancel the whole tournament or US Open for that matter. It's one sport - especially for women - when there is a ton of money to be lost. Nobody profits from cancelling matches so this one day deal is only an excuse which is good.

There are probably only 5% or less of Totallympics users that approve boycotting sporting events for political reasons. After all, we know better than the average person the stains left in the history of sports, because of such acts.

Also Americas image has been tarnished for years now, very few things that happen there seem normal.

But Americans still think their way is the only right way and everyone else should listen to them :p

A shocking and disgusting amount of wealth.

So much for that social equality then, huh? :p

Welcome to the real world where 1% of its population owns 80% of its wealth.

I suppose you're not boycotting Amazon though? ;)

  14. There's no need for any conversation. People will get killed by police over and over again all over thw world. Boycotting a baseball season won't change anything :dunno:

PS. I wonder if Bryce Harper or Mike Trout forfeit even an ounce of their 200 millon contracts because they're not playing games?

LA teams really living up to the California standard.

LeBron's legacy is still on the line. He didn't come to Lakers to have seasons cancelled over political reasons. If there's one player furious over games being postponed, it's LeBron for sure.

I was definitely cheering for Sato as well, too bad the race - which in itself was a rather good one - ended in such an anticlimactic way.

About the rest of your post, I'll use your own word: hogwash :) Nobody said Sato can't be called an Indy 500 winner, no idea where you even got that nonsense from.

I wasn't talking about this specific race and Sato as the winner. NASCAR's overtime rules are trash no matter who profits from them and I'd support a finish under yellow at Indy even if Dixon would have won it. Save those damn gimmicks for NASCAR. Guess you completely missed my point.

The way they deal with late cautions in NASCAR is so much better than in IndyCar, where they just say "fuck it, this is the end". Ugh, way to mess up races.

Hogwash! It's Indianapolis 500, not Indianapolis 510. NASCAR's overtime aka green-white-checkered is pure bullshit for me and artificial gimmick that should be removed but quite frankly they've gone even further with mandatory 4 drivers in the title race at the last race. NASCAR is like the LAST place you search for ideas to improve quality of racing.

If those stupid rules were in place in 1998 then Dale Earnhardt would have probably never won Daytona 500

If rain-shortened races are valid and someone can be called an Indy 500 winner after actually winning Indy 320 or something then it makes no sense that a potential leader at the 500 mile mark can't be called a winner because of some artificial gimmick. Nobody cares about Indianapolis 510 winners.

PS. Thank God for Pigot's crash because Dixon has made this season a complete dud already. I was obviously cheering for Sato here :p
