They won't get a place in the olympic qualifiers, that's 100% sure. However, I don't know if the 3rd place of the event in which they compete gets the place instead or if it will be simply assigned by world ranking among the eliminated teams of all tournaments.

I think it's the same case as if Japan would get the place so the quota goes to ranking.

yes, if not eligible teams get 1st or 2nd in their tournament, the spot is reallocated through the world ranking...

directly from FIH website: " **if Japan, Scotland or Wales finish in the top 2 of their respective pools, they will not secure a place in the Olympic qualifiers. Japan have already qualified as both host and winners of the Asian Games; for Scotland and Wales, the reason is that England are the nominated country for Great Britain’s qualification pathway. If any of these three teams do finish in the top 2, the team that finishes third does NOT automatically qualify for the Olympic qualifiers. Any such additional place is determined by the FIH World Rankings as at the completion of the continental championships (8 September 2019)"

^Thank you.

Italy and Austria qualifying would potentially kick China out of the olympic play-offs, maybe France or Korea if they fail at their own tournament, maybe South Africa if they fail too and also give up continental quota... those are the only ones at risk.

Canada and Malaysia have nothing to worry and because of that I think one or both will lose the semifinal.

:NED:ARG :AUS have assured themselves of top 4 finish in Womens Pro League. Hence they have also confirmed a spot in Olympic qualifiers.

After the completion of FIH Pro League and FIH Series Finals, following teams are qualified for Olympic games qualifiers:

From Pro League: :AUS, :BEL, :GBR, :NED

From Series Finals: :CAN, :MAS, :IND, :RSA, :FRA, :IRL

Remaining 4 spots would go to rankings. If any of the above mentioned teams win Olympic quota by winning their continental qualifier, there place will also be taken by next teams in ranking.

At present top 4 not already qualified in Ranking are: :ARG, :GER, :NZL, :ESP

With Argentina, Australia almost sure to win their continental tournaments, and European winner also most likely coming from the above mentioned teams, an additional 3 spots should be open for teams on basis of rankings. Next 3 in line are : :PAK, :CHN and :KOR

Next two in line are :AUT and :EGY. But they are quite behind :KOR in points and it would be tough for them to overtake them in the next ranking update.

P.S. :EGY should qualify as African team even if they finish second in the tournament behind :RSA provided South Africa relinquish their spot and Egypt maintain top 20 ranking. (They have a healthy lead over 21st ranked Poland).

P.P.S. I am also assuming that FIH won't impose any more sanction on :PAK for withdrawing from Pro League midway. And Pakistan in pot 4 would face a top 3 team (India or one of the top European teams) which would be a mouth watering clash.

Why :RSA will relinquish quota?

Because they only send the athletes/teams qualified via international route and always relinquish quotas earned at continental tournaments.

Is it only applicable for hockey or all team sports?

    • I still shocks, that a country of 4-5 million inhabitants? can be a powerhouse in almost every winter sport + handball, football (most recently with Haaland) and athletics: Ingebrigtsen, Warholm, etc. With such a small population, they can't be missing out on any major talent, surely? This must be the best training system in the world...
