21-year-old :GBR Jemma Reekie has set a new British indoor 800m record in Glasgow with a time of 1:57.91. Her former personal best was 2:01.45 (outdoor). Reekie’s time is the fastest time set since 2006 on a indoor 800m and it moves her to 11th on the world all-time list on women's indoor 800m. :GBR Laura Muir finished second in 1:58.44.

There has also been some discussion about footwear. It has been stated by some that Jemma Reekie and Laura Muir used a new Nike prototype of spikes. These types of spikes are only available to selected elite athetes sponsored by Nike.

It has to be said it is not clear if Reekie used the new protoype during the race, as it appears to be Muir who is holding the shoes on the picture to the right.

Also, I hate when Fosbury changed high jumping, and when swimmers wore swimwear that made them go faster, and when bobsledding embraced aerodynamics ?

That's all fun and well, but if I'm not mistaken World Athletics has a rule stating footwear has to be 'reasonably available to the general public' to allow it to be used.

Those super swimsuits were banned relatively quickly by the way. And aerodynamics or (even worse) Fosbury's change are even way more terrible comparisons.

I am sure there is one tiny village shop deep in the forests of Oregon that has an amazing selection of shoes.  Similarly a village shop way up beyond the Norwegian Arctic Circle full of cross-country skis, another deep in the Black Forest that sells luges etc etc.  :mumble:

Not sure luge has those rules though and most of those top cross-country skis can in fact be bought by the general public, they're just rather expensive :p

A few comments about this week's update:

:DMA Thea Lafond becomes the small island nation's first athlete to qualify for Tokyo.

:GBR Harry Coppell jump of 5.80m in Rouen is not listed on WA's season lists. It's marked with an "UNC". I'm not sure what this remark means? However, British Athletics mention it as an Olympic standard, so I will include him on my list: https://www.britishathletics.org.uk/news-and-features/weekend-update-10-02-2020/

Lastly, as you can see, I still include Russian athletes in my updates and list. Currently WA doens't give ANA-status to any Russian athletes. If WA again begins to give ANA-status to some Russian athletes, it's not certain any former performances under :RUS flag will count. This could mean Morgunov would have to achieve the Olympic standard again to qualify. Nevertheless, I will continue to include any Russian athlete who achieves the Olympic standard in my updates and list. Bear in mind, my list of qualified athletes it's not a perfect resemblance of the final start lists for Tokyo.

    • Although it was a terrible Olympics for Canada, and my two favourite sports (Hockey and Short Track) really didn't work out for us, there were a couple of fun times.    -Women's Pursuit team winning gold because while it was not unexpected at all, it was still a great triumph against an amazing adversary.    -Dubreuil getting a surprise bronze in speed skating 500m.    -Really all of speed skating, Canada and otherwise.    -I really want to say Dubois getting gold in short track, but the whole thing was a mess.    -The last two ends of the men's curling gold medal game.    -Kingsbury getting gold. But it was more relief than excitement, unfortunately.    -I really like the luge relay. Canada was not involved, unfortunately, but it's always fun to watch.    -Men's freeski big air final was nuts! In all the good ways. That was truly the highest level of competition I've seen in a very long time.    -The dog crossing the finish line in cross country, which should have been the meme of the Olympics (not that...other thing).
    • Apparent Gu and Atkin do not like each other at all anymore. They were good freinds a few years ago but now hate one another.  I’m not sure Gu and Li Fanghui like each other either that much.
    • It was also nice to have actual crowds again. I think the Beijing organizers did the best they could given the COVID regulations that still existed in China at the time, but it sure did dampen the atmosphere *a lot*.
