Athletics Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

There is no B Final at the WCh so I think all the finalists will qualify. See what happened at World Relays this year:

-4x100m (no B final) Italy DNF in final but directly qualified for the WCh;

-4x400m (with B final) USA DQ in final, no direct qualification for the WCh.

Let me clarify one thing about this issue. As you mentioned, there was B Final in 4x400 m where Czech Republic finished 3rd, total ranking 11th. Thanks to DQ of US team they moved up to 10th place and directly qualified for WCH. This is what I am happy about, proud of.

But one thing about qualification from WCH in Doha to SOG Tokyo. In the qualifying standarts is nowhere written that "ALL FINALISTS" will automatically qualify. I think, this is a small misunderstanding that IOC or IAAF should correct a bit. If a team in Final A has DQ or DNF, it means that the team has no final results within the championships. It has qualifying time/place to the final but in the final itself could be for the team either DQ or DNF. In this case, if somebody has really no result in the final, the 8TH DIRECTLY QUALIFIED TEAM for Tokyo 2020 should be the team, which is basically 9th in the final ranking - 1st team that did not make it to the Final A.

To clarify, I am not saying how is it gonna be. This is just my common sense point of view how I think it might happen. In my opinion it's the most logical way.

    • Weightlifting formula is more or less similar to 2020 which was considered terrible by everybody!    this is a tough sport, you can't be in your best shape for too many events. there will be risks of serious injuries this way. with these rules you need 5 good results to qualify. if you bomb out in an event to score a zero you are out of the Olympics unless you replace it with another event. which means most of these poor guys have to participate in 7-8 events (and not just 5) to make up for possible bomb outs.    most importantly if you get injured anytime during this period (almost 2 years) you are out of the Olympics! that's how Sohrab Moradi missed the Tokyo Olympics despite breaking the WR during the qualification period. you can miss the Olympics in 2028 if you get injured late 2026 !  Karlos Nasar couldn't win the Olympic title if we had these rules in 2024   I understand 2024 qualification formula wasn't great either, it had its own flaws but this one is much worse for threatening athletes' health.

    • Off to Milan for the 145th session of the International Olympic Committee. Although the agenda has not been published yet, there shouldn’t be any major items over these two days, apart from the election of a member of the IOC Executive Board. This will be the eighth time the session is held in Italy, the last one being during the Turin 2006 Olympic Games.
