If the women's 4x400 relay team qualifies and the golfers qualify and a couple more boxers qualify, we'll get to something like 106-108. That is an increase of 23-25 participants. Now, that number of 23-25 may look large, but remember that 16 of that is contributed by the women's hockey team and 5 by the women's relay team - both of them sure to be also-rans at the olympics. So, realistically, those 21 athletes actually translate to just 2 quotas, just 2 more events we will be participating in. Further, 2-3 spots will be contributed by Golf which was not a part of London to begin with. Is that really such an improvement over London, even in participation terms, let alone medal terms ?? Dont think so..Given a choice, I personally would have preferred a contingent of, say, 87, which included the men's archery team than a contingent of 106 which includes 2 also-ran teams. So, realistically, the strength of this contingent is very similar to the London contingent. Even in terms of medal prospects, I predict we'll end up with 5-7 medals, as opposed to the lofty prediction of 10 by the babus. I feel Jitu and Narsingh are the top level medal prospects and I expect a medal from each of them. Narsingh proved his pedigree at the world champs (and I read somewhere that at world champs, Jordan Borroughs seeked Narsingh out and said that Narsingh was the only one Borroughs was worried about. If true, that is a huge endorsement). Jitu's sport is a highly unpredictable sport but he is just an extremely consistent shooter. Even when he doesn't qualify for finals in world cups, he is always at least in the top 15 and within touching distance of qualifying. At the Olympics, where the size of the field will be much smaller, I expect him to make both finals and hopefully return with at least one medal. Then we have the strong medal contenders - Bindra, Gagan, Women Archery Team, Yogeshwar, Saina, Shiva Thapa - I feel the medal chances for this bunch is around 50% - so let's say we get 3 medals from among these 6. And then we have the medal hopefuls - all other shooters (including 2nd medal for Jitu), Sandeep Tomar, the 3 female wrestlers, whichever boxers qualify, Dipa, Sindhu, Srikanth, Deepika, Atanu, Bops/Sania, Bops/Paes, Mirabai, men's hockey team - these athletes need to have the performance of their lives at Rio to snatch a medal (just like Vijay Kumar had at London and Joydeep Karmarkar almost did) - not all of them are at the same level (Sindhu has more of a chance than Bops/Paes for example) but hoping for 1 surprise medal from this group That brings the tally to 6, same as London... Good analysis. Finally someone with realistic analysis. We really haven't made much progress in the last four yrs. Both in terms of medal prospects and interms of people with decent chance of winning ( as opposed to athletes just going there for a trip to Ipanema and such) we should have done much better.now we have several private funds and trusts supporting our athletes and the govt is also taking more interest and providing more funds. But our federations are the worst ( apart from nrai) . in boxing we have lost most of the ground we covered in the last decade.

As per ISSF rules, China had decided to exchange one of them with the men's 50 m rifle prone spot, which was awarded to Zhao Shengbo. Hence, the remaining berth was returned to ISSF for reallocation as they cannot exchange more than 1 quota @MantaRaymarc as the shooting qualification thread host do explain You are mixing exchange of quota between events and the right of an noc to select candidates based on the quotas won . the two are not at all the same. Anyways the point is moot as nrai will not change anything at this juncture.

There is the National Interstate event next week, I guess most will participate in it, not a bad choice, we could not achieve much in Europe. With heats, semi-finals and finals you get multiple chances in such events, unlike Europe where you just have 1 race in 1 event. shrikant 3 Posted June 25, 2016 #2488 Share Posted June 25, 2016 Both arjun atwal and Anirbhan Lahiri made the cut in Quicken loans US PGA golf tournament... Anirbhan was 2 over par after 16 holes and needed to make 2 birdies in next 2 holes to make the cut.. . And he did it.. With a 65 foot bunker shot direct to the hole... While the next hole he sinked a 15 foot birdie... Amazing golf by Anirbhan...

What if Pooja won 2 golds in the 2 finals instead of finishing 4th, still NRAI would have sent Ayonika who did not even look close to qualifying in finals in World Cup events both in 2015 and 2016. We are not China or US, we somehow manage to earn a very few medals. NRAI have to be realistic and give an athlete in form some chance. We saw the result of being adamant in archery. Vivek 6 Posted June 25, 2016 #2490 Share Posted June 25, 2016 I request all of you to be positive and hope that we will win maximum of medals in Rio. In 2008 before Beijing Olympics how many were thinking of Bindra's Gold and sushils & vijender's bronze. Similarly in 2012 vijay kumar and yogeshwar was underdogs. So have a faith in our players. Hope 2016 Rio will produce many new hero's of Indian sports. Many of our players taking part in Rio have defeated Olympic champions in their day, many fall short of beating them by a thin margin. Hope they all will produce their best at Rio. Many players of Indian delegation is of the class that equaling their best performance assures them of medal. So hope maximum of our players will either achive new best or atleast equaling their best so that we can achive our best tally ever.
