Early thoughts: i will vote for one of Aleksandra Mirosław (the one and only gold in Paris), Wilfredo Leon (best player in our volleyball team in Paris), Iga Świątek (another RG win but only Bronze in the Olympics) or Natalia Bukowiecka nee Kaczmarek ( the most valuable individual medal in Paris for me)

How about Niewadoma?  A heroic TdF win.

And who would you choose?

Bookies favourite at the moment is Keely Hodgkinson 800m Paris, probably mine as well.  Although there were many great :GBR golds, I think most people know that a gold in an historic athletics event is the most difficult of all.  Also, her final was absolutely at TV prime time, and the history is that most-watched event of the year usually wins. Also, there is usually a strong regional vote, and she is VERY typical of her region.

But she totally failed at the Olympics . And it’s more important to me.

Agree. That is why Natalia Kaczmarek is top 4 for me. No olympic gold but still a medal in historic athletics running event

World Athletics announce the World Athletes of the Year.  Big awards go to Letsile Tebogo and to Sifan Hassan.

Women’s World Athlete of the Year: Sifan Hassan (NED)
Men’s World Athlete of the Year: Letsile Tebogo (BOT)

Women’s track: Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone (USA)
Women’s field: Yaroslava Mahuchikh (UKR)
Women’s out of stadium: Sifan Hassan (NED)
Men’s track: Letsile Tebogo (BOT)
Men’s field: Mondo Duplantis (SWE)
Men’s out of stadium: Tamirat Tola (ETH)

Women’s Rising Star: Sembo Almayew (ETH)
Men’s Rising Star: Mattia Furlani (ITA)

Seems a bit strange to me - OK, there is a case for Tebogo over Duplantis who can basically win every year, but for me Manuchikh beating an almost 30 year old WR beats winning Olympic Marathon Gold.

    • There is a transgender volleyball player here in Brazil; there was even a recent controversy (this year) when a city banned her from playing in a certain competition, which ended up in court, ultimately in her favor.   But the situation is much simpler than that; the reason for this decision is because of the two female boxers who won at Paris 2024 (who apparently are not transgender).

    • there were rumors about it for quite a while, but as I wrote, it was never confirmed so, it might well be just some haters throwing out some shit on her 🤷
    • Where did you get that?   I'm not sure I would have considered her to have dissapeared from out of nowhere, at least since after Tokyo... she did win medals at the next two World Championships. I think it's just recently, she's been struggling with injury which is why she's completely out of form...
    • Even though I'm not the biggest fan of her, always sucks to see a career ending through injury and not on your own terms
    • This is going to have an effect on very likely 0 athletes, possibly 1 or 2 we don't really know about yet. It's really mostly the cheapest possible way for them to make a sort of political statement, without having any significant backlash since it won't really affect anyone at the top level of international sports.   Edit: worded a bit wrong, I was thrown off by everywhere 'trans women' being mentioned as the target of this. Of course there is also the somewhat larger category of DSD and the likes, which will certainly affect a few athletes - unfortunately they are often thrown under the bus or mentioned as 'not really women anyway' or something like that, despite, you know, being.
    • Mary Rand has died aged 86. The first British woman to win a Gold in track and field at the 1964 Tokyo Games (where she also took home a further two medals in the Women’s 4x100m relay and Pentathlon).
    • Athing Mu competed in the USA trials in 2024 and 2025 post the 2023 rule changes. She also won Gold in 2022 and Bronze in 2023.    Jelimo the jury is out. She doesn’t look male like the other two do.
    • People focus on trans people because it's easier to pinpoint the affected athletes. Meanwhile it's the athletes with (suspected) DSDs that will have tougher time to convince the authorities and the public opinion that they belong to women's sports.
