Kurt Hennrich :CZE (Czechoslovakia) 88 - Alpine Skiing. 7th in the 1956 Cortina Downhill he finished on 1 ski

One of his most famous quotes about the 1956 Italian Olympic downhill won by the legendary Toni Sailer.

Quote

"Bylo patnáct pod nulou, pětačtyřicet lidí nedojelo. Já jsem jel z Čechoslováků poslední, dojížděl jsem nějakého Angličana, který startoval přede mnou. Ale nějak mi drhla pravá lyže, tak jsem zbytek závodu dojel na jedné lyži. Až v cíli jsem zjistil, že se mi vytrhla hrana," řekl Hennrich před lety Českému rozhlasu.

It was fifteen below zero, forty-five people didn't finish the race. I was the last of the Czechoslovaks to start, I rememer catching on the track one of the Englishmans who started in front of me. But somehow my right ski rubbed off, so I finished the rest of the race on one ski. Only at the finish did I find out that my edge had come out," Hennrich told to the Czech Radio years ago.

Am I right in saying they didn’t even have ski lifts in those days?  You had to climb most of the hill yourself to start.  Ski Jumps only came in with Squaw Valley 1960.  Correct me if I’m wrong.

Ski lifts were introduced here and there basically from the 30´s so I am pretty sure Cortina had at least one in 1956.

Seriously I have no idea, but that´s a good question, the jumps were always in downhill but I guess the skiers just didn't risk as much as they do today, so those jumps didn't look so big and dangerous. just some stopping before the jump and a then a small "hop" like this :d

Do know for sure that the first time the Downhill was run in Garmisch 1936 they had to climb.  Or perhaps a car half-way up, or something but definitely some climbing.

The other thing I do know was that the tuck position was only introduced in the early 60s, so they were never going all out before that.

As you can see in the film, they are still racing in powder, so way slower.

    • How wonderful!   I met the national rowing (and beach rowing) coach of EST/LTU/LAT on the way to ice hockey one day, who's Canadian by the way. I also flew home on the same flight as JC Schoonmaker's mom and friends, so we chatted for a bit.
    • Yea I only used transit besides this Uber / bus to the airport and back. All the venues were at the end of the line, so it allowed you to speak with other fans/volunteers etc. I even met Corrine Stoddard's mom after the first session of short track on the way back, and told her to remember our conversation if she won a medal later in the Olympics. We know how that ended up...
    • I used public transit the entire time I was in Milan.   My first day was a doozy, because I had to two flights to reach Malpensa, and then the train into town was delayed, and then I got confused a station and boarded a tram instead of the metro, proceeded to travel in the wrong direction, got off, walked back to the station, found the metro, got off a station early, walked around a kilometer to my hotel, and checked in.   My colleagues mostly took cabs upon arrival, but I deduced to take the frugal approach. That said, I was a true public transit professional by the time I left Milan.   I actually enjoyed my rides to and from venues, because I'd just chat up fans and volunteers from different countries. It helped me learn more about the city too.
    • It's the olympics, sleep is for the weak!    The first day i got there i was on a 12 hour flight from l.a to rome (flight that left mid day), lay over, another flight to milan, uber to hotel, then right away to speed skating (1500m men), then after uber to hockey venue for women's gold final, then after the celebrations uber to the hotel, i ended up being awake about 36 hours that day, the next morning i thought to go sightseeing in the center of milan, but ended up sleeping until like 2pm..... and had speed skating/short track that night
    • I tried to get onto the metro multiple times and gave up    I had just arrived the day of from Bangkok (12 hr flight) and was just exhausted and wanted to sleep
    • Plus, you missed out on a potential metro ride with me, which is quite priceless in my opinion
    • My hotel was very close to Rho so was easy to get there, but it was so far from the hockey venue that after the women's gold medal match it was so expensive to get back, and also the next day after the usa slovakia semis it took forever, the asshole driver took the city and not the freeway
    • Uber cost me $224 CAD to get back to the hotel from the OC. It basically prevented me from buying tickets to a speed skating session
    • Romania's national team coach, Mircea Lucescu, has died half an hour ago He was in hospital since March 30th, just before the friendly match against Slovakia. Unbelievable how the life can have such turns...in March 26th he was in Istanbul playing the WC qualifying play-off vs Turkiye and now he died.    Thank you very much for every moments you bring us in your huge career (he's on 3rd place in a most trophies won in career, after Ferguson and Guardiola) and may your soul rest in peace, Mr. Lucescu.
