Australian dressage selection trials start this weekend in Odense, Denmark. That's the first of two selection events, the other will be in June in Rotterdam. Selection policy seems straight forward, Grand Prix scores from both events will be averaged and top 4 will be selected.

But we already have some situation. Sadly, Lyndal Oatley (Sandro Boy) will miss Odense because of an injury. I wonder if Australian selectors will make an exception for her, since she is by some margin the best Aussie. In theory though, her score from Odense will be the average of the lowest three Aussie scores at that event. That's the official policy if someone has to miss a selection event (because of a valid reason).

She is better than others, but I'm not completely sure if she can make up that difference in the second selection event.

Looks like we might not see Hiroshi Hoketsu becoming the oldest ever Olympian in Rio. He still hasn't competed in an Olympic qualification position and there is only about a month left to reach MQS (2 scores of 64% in Grand Prix).

He appeared on start lists in both Mannheim two weeks ago and Odense this week, but he didn't compete in both at the end.

Australian dressage selection standings after 1/2 selection events...

Kristy Oatley (Du Soleil) - 69.520%

Sue Hearn (Remmington) - 68.820%

Kelly Layne (Udon) - 67.880%

Mary Hanna (Boogie Woogie) - 67.540%

Mary Hanna (Umbro) - 66.920%

Maree Tomkinson (Diamantina) - 66.100%

Brett Parbery (Weltmieser) - 65.140%

Lyndal Oatley (Sandro Boy) withdrew from Odense because of an injury so in theory her first selection score should be 66.066% (the average of the lowest three scores). Sue Hearn, who was pretty much the biggest outsider, pulled a big upset. :) Tomkinson and Parbery are most probably out of contention now.

Bernadette Pujals has been officially named for Olympics. http://www.eurodressage.com/equestrian/2016/05/17/bernadette-pujals-officially-nominated-2016-olympic-games

This means that there will be no reallocated quota for Argentina, since Pujals has decided to go to Rio despite initial second thoughts. This also means that Mexico will not miss equestrian events. :)

Woohoo  It will be difficult for her to repeat her performance from Beijing, but I hope she can at least make the first cut.

Here's something. Apparently, if Joao Victor Oliva and Haddington make the Brazilian dressage team, then we will see a horse born in Afghanistan at the Olympics! To put that into perspective, I don't think I have ever heard of some Olympic horse who was born in Asia, let alone in country like :AFG

Looks like Afghanistan might qualify an Olympian. :d

In other news, it really looks like sky's the limit for :IRL Judy Reynolds and Vancouver. They improved the Irish GP record by another 1% today (75.240%). That's already the top 10 zone for Rio (more or less). :)

Wow, that's really encouraging news, thanks for bringing this to my attention :)

Long list for the German dressage team has been announced, based on the results of German championships.

Also, team for Nations Cup in Aachen is Werth, Broring-Sprehe, Schneider and Rothenberger, they are the real frontrunners for the selection. Someone else would really have to excel in the coming weeks to change that. We also had a few shockers at the championships as the World no. 1 Kristina Broring-Sprehe lost her Grand Prix Special title to Isabell Werth and Grand Prix Freestyle title to Dorothee Schneider.

    • Canoe Sprint There is a now a cap of 5 athletes per gender in the kayak events (down from 6 in 2024). The World Championships has been replaced by the Olympic Qualification Rankings.   K2 lost 2 boat quotas while K4 has gained 1 boat quota. Quota distribution is quite complicated as it usually is for canoe sprint. They also force nations to compete in a minimum number of events based on the number of athletes qualified; 2 and 3 athletes per boat class must compete in 2 events, 4 must compete in all 3 events and 5 must compete in all 3 events and have two entries in the K1 event.
    • Wrestling will have a completely new format, I do not like the changes. ranking isn't really a good idea in this sport, this will force wrestlers to compete in so many events to collect points. which is not good for their health. specially with the current UWW ranking points distribution system which is plain stupid   they are also gifting 18 quotas to very weak countries by that last qualification event. but I understand their point of view. can't wait to see lots of Russian wrestlers compete for weak countries for that 1 available quota.
    • Canoe Slalom Quotas from men's/women's K1 have been moved to men's/women's KX1. K1 will now have 14 quotas while KX1 will have 10 quotas. C1 remains at 17 quotas. Athletes may participate in other events up to a maximum of 2 athletes per NOC.   The World Championship qualifier has been dropped in favour of the Olympic Qualification Rankings (7 K1, 10 C1, 3 KX1), afterwards you have the Continental Qualifiers (1 per boat) and then a new Global Qualifier (2 per boat).   There were a few changes regarding ways to ensure an athlete can only obtain 1 quota. The biggest being at each stage the boat priority is K1 > KX1 > C1 for the rankings and KX1 > K1 > C1 for the continental/global qualifiers. This basically means if the same athlete qualifiers in multiple boats then the quota will be given to the kayak over canoe.
    • I'll post significant changes periodically. I'll start with the recently added/updated documents.   Archery The addition of mixed compound (12M & 12W) forced a reduction on the recurve side. The mixed compound quotas are distributed as follows   Host - 1 World Championships - 3 Continental Games - 5 World Ranking List - 2 Final Qualifier - 1   To compensate the team events will now only have 8 nations. 2 quotas were removed from the World Ranking List and 2 were removed from the Final Qualifier.   Individual recurve and mixed recurve distribution is the same
    • In Rome, it would be useful to roof the swimming pool complex at Foro Italico, possibly with the option of retracting the roof and covering the tennis court complex. Overall, there's a lot to do, for example, compared to Budapest, but unfortunately, this is Italy How many years has Roma been building their new stadium, and they keep pushing back the completion date- now I read it's 2030? and it should be ready. The same goes for Milan- there should be a modern complex of indoor swimming pools with 50 meters pools, etc., but there's a problem with one stupid football stadium, which will only be built after an ultimatum from UEFA
