The UEFA Executive Committee has approved the creation of a third UEFA club competition for the 2021–2024 competition cycle at its meeting today in Dublin.

• The new competition (which has the working title of UEL2) will mirror the existing UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, and feature 32 teams in a group stage.

• The format will see eight groups of four teams, followed by the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

• An additional knock-out round will be played before the round of 16 between teams ranked second in their groups and the third-ranked teams of the UEFA Europa League groups.

• The new competition will feature 141 matches over 15 match weeks, exactly like the UEFA Europa League.

• The winner of the new competition will be entitled to participate in the UEFA Europa League in the following season.

• The new competition matches will be played on Thursdays. As such, the UEFA Champions League continues to be played on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the UEFA Europa League and the new competition will be played on Thursday with one additional kick-off time slot for a limited number of matches in principle at 16.30 (CET) to be further defined.

• All club competition finals will be played in the same week: Wednesday (new competition), Thursday (UEFA Europa League) and Saturday (UEFA Champions League).

Also, as part of the 2021-2024 competition cycle, the UEFA Europa League will now be similarly streamlined with the same format, including an additional knock-out round played before the round of 16 between teams ranked second in their groups and the third-ranked teams of the UEFA Champions League groups.

So, UEFA is finally being honest, about only caring for the top 10 countries or so. Everyone from 15 down can go have their own tournament at 5 in the afternoon on a thursday and stop messing with the big boys.

Luka Modric wins the Ballon d'Or 2018 :champion:

After ten years of Ronaldo or Messi winning "the golden ball", Modric becomes the first to break their domination. Luka Modric becomes the first Croatian player to win the award. He also becomes the second oldest winner of the Ballon d'or at the age of 33, (Stanley Matthews won it at the age of 41 in 1956), and he beats Fabio Cannavaro with 4 days.

Last night Atlanta won the MLS final against Portland. It was live on Eurosport as MLS usually is, with a commentator who's been doing it for 20-25+ years....but last night he was either ignoring the match on purpose or he was just drunk. I watched it this morning and I have never in my life heard a commentator talk so much nonsense and so little about the match :d

I heard him recite a poem about death, stories about Garibaldi, nickel mines in Canada, dirty clothes in the dressing room in his own time as a player, 90 minutes of anecdotes about his life in the football world and the 1-0 was only briefly mentioned..."this is the guy that has the annoying habit to score when I'm talking" and then he went on with his story about referees. The 2-0 was 100% ignored, he did not mention a single word about it.

He is now fired, although it's not sure whether he was already fired and he did this out of revenge, or he got fired because of this.

    • Until recently, Ukrainian fencing was just Kharlan and sabre. Maybe epee sometimes. I don't remember them ever was strong in foil. There was a time when Russia, Romania and Poland were strong in foil at that time when Italy dominated but I don't remember Ukraine anymore.   Hungarian women with Aida Mahomed were too strong for many years.

    • Argentina also has ski centers on the Tierra del Fuego but that doesn't mean it will immediately become a powerhouse in this sport
    • Speak for yourself. Why should we give up our one great talent of the younger generation when we have no one else? Maybe from the same reason that the USA didn't give up Schiffrin to another country when she had 17-18...
    • A very ignorant statement.   Of course the UK is not exactly known for its winter sport but there are some ski resorts mainly in Scotland, like the Cairngorms or the Nevis Range.
    • But in women's epee another defeat by Ukraine. We are slowly developing a complex about this country, because we are constantly losing to them in sabre too. Sabre has always been Ukrainian, epee for a draw or our slight advantage but a failed in women`s foil, which is already a shocking novelty
