Weightlifting at the Summer Olympic Games 2020

Recommended Posts

Today is the day, history for the Netherlands! Enzo Kuworge will be the first Dutch weightlifter at the Olympics since Piet van der Kruk in 1968! :cheer:

Van der Kruk was the Dutch Eurosport commentator from 1992 until 2016, but sadly passed away in June last year. I find it heartbreaking that he, a true lover of the sport, didn't make it long enough - by a year and a bit - to finally see someone follow in his footsteps :(

Meanwhile the B-group snatch finished, 180kg as best lift(s), which is the PB of Kuworge from earlier this year. Who knows what's possible in an A-group with only seven athletes, only three of which are really a whole class above the rest. I'm hoping for 6th for Kuworge.

Bidani officially out.. what a disaster for :ALG , they very likely now will finish the games without any medal...unless Triki will provide some miracle in M Triple Jump, but highly unlikely I am afraid :(

Yeah, there goes their last semi-realistic chance :(

On the other hand, it does increase the chance for a Syrian medal, which should be not much of a problem now without any major issues for Asaad. Would be only their 4th ever medal and their first since 2004.

I think Nagy wasn't prepared for the quota reallocation and already kinda retired when he got the news, that's why he was even weaker than at the ECh. Still, 6 successful attempts, a nice way to end a career.

In extremely unsurprising news :NZL Laurel Hubbard has announced her retirement.

I imagine the stress, the daily humiliation, not being considered what she was. :( Good life Laurel, hoping it will give you a lot of satisfaction.

Her body has also clearly been breaking down for a few years, this isn't the first time she unexpectedly bombs out. 43 is extremely old for a weightlifter, after all.

Well unfortunately for her even at home she's been getting bombarded with hate and humiliation.

    • That was known from the start for  and will be planned for.   Sadly just the reality of sports in North America. Canada and the US are both huge, a flight from Vancouver to Halifax or from Seattle to Miami is north of five hours. Every sports league in North America has to deal with this kind of travel logistics on the regular, so none of this will seem particularly unusual to a North American player.
    • That’s not a long distance, it’s barely a 2h flight and there is no difference in timezone. Easily doable for fans as well.
