Great Britain National Thread

Well, things have fairly turned around. Rowing stunk up the first few days, but was the only serious failure. Athletics looked bad for a while, but our historically strongest events - middle distances & relays - just about rescued us. A huge number of success stories in sports major & minor, new & old.  Far more gold than anyone predicted, far more medals than anyone predicted & a far higher placing in the medal than anyone predicted.  And there’s far more good young athletes going forward to Paris than there will be retirees.

And even rowing will probably improve as the last twenty years have showed most sports are able to improve after a poor showing.

Britain has more athletics medals than Germany and France combined which never felt that likely at the start of the Athletics.

I think you're being a little unfair to rowing. As always margins are small. In 2016, seven GB crews had top four finishes. This time eight did so. The problem was too many fourths of course. Of the 41 rowers selected 33 were making their debut which helps to explain the reduction in medals but hopefully they will benefit from the experience gained in Tokyo in three years time.

Incidentally rowing didn't have the biggest fall off in medals. Three sports had a reduction of more than one medal between 2016 and 2020:

Gymnastics  -4

Rowing         -3

Canoeing     -2

The results were misleading. What actually happened in all the races was that all the crews were in medal position at half-way then faded away outside. So that argues that something went wrong in the preparation.

That rounds up a fantastic showing for GB, I recant any doubts I had up to the first few days of the games. If 22 golds and 65 medals is a 'worse' Olympics then British sport is in superb shape.

As one of the most active National Threads on Totallympics, I would like to inform you that if you are interested I could create a sub-domain only for British sport fans, named like greatbritain.totallympics.com (and where instead of greatbritain we can put any word you prefer), with the same structure of Totallympics (sections, threads etc.).

You can find more info in this thread. Let me know if you are interested :)

Wow at Jason Kenny and Lauren Price.

And British Athletics still needs a rethink because why did they let Callum Hawkins run with a bad ankle injury when injured marathon runners never manage to have successful races.

With how Team GB has a habit of meeting dramatic sporting predictions I am not ruling out GB getting near that ridiculous target Christian Malcom has predicted.

I wonder if they will be a review of the funding made in December - it looks bizarre swimming has had its funding cut just when more is needed to help develop the next generation of elite British swimmers to follow this one.

I am going to put a bet on no GB medals in Athletics at either of the two upcoming worlds or at the 2024 Olympics  - it feels like it’s got to happen some day.

    • Your most ever at a Summer Olympics was 14 golds, 20 would be a big increase even with the new sports  I’d say out of them, only costal rowing has a chance of gold, and flag football a medal if they can qualify.    Wouldn’t breaking the 14 from 1984 be a good for Italy? I’d say so. They can’t all convert after all, and you’ve been hovering in the 8-13 range for a while (although Italy has gotten better the past two)   For Canada at least, 11+ golds would be amazing, anything else would be a bonus. We won 9 in Tokyo which is our highest total ever.
    • Personally, I'm really looking forward to Japan's performance in the World Cup. From the current situation, Japan has a very distinctive playing style. They have strong tactical ideas whether facing European teams or South American teams. However, Japan has never won a knockout match in the World Cup. As someone who has been following Asian football for a long time, I really admire Japanese football.
    • Italy didn't qualify again.    Well, now all that's left is for Germany to be eliminated again in the group stage and we'll guarantee another 4 years of "Brazil, the only five-time champion in history, nobody is bigger than Brazil, respect our history and blah blah" that we use on the internet.
    • Failing to qualify for the World Cup once can be put down to bad luck or other reasons, but missing out three times in a row must be due to an all-round gap. I feel sorry for Italy.
    • Italians can only blame themselves. Serie A has been run by foreigners more than any other Top 5 domestic league. There are zero global stars not named Donnarumma. This is the weakest Italian crop of players I can remember and it's not even close.   As for Poland, our defense did a terrible job. Unlike the much-maligned Michniewicz & Probierz who often parked the bus, Urban completely run out of BS luck since errors proved too numerous & too costly.
    • Okay, but defeats to Macedonia and Bosnia are unacceptable. Above all, let Italians start playing in Italian clubs... Look at Milan or Como...  Another think is the old and ugly stadiums - Türkiye or Poland currently have much better infrastructure than we do.
    • Problem is, that the current funding system of Italian sports - since 2018- relies on football paying the lion's share through taxes (around 70% of the sum that is redistributed). So the rest is strong until it can draw money from football, which in turn makes football weaker and less able to generate money and then who knows.
    • I prefer our current strong sport at all and weak football than a lucky promotion and defeat at the World Cup, as in 2010 or 2014. Sinner, Brignone, or Antonelli are worth 100 times more than losers like Bastoni.
    • if tonight's humiliation means 20+ gold and 50+ total medals in 2 years time in LA, I'll take it 1 billion times    and I'd never change the emotions of the 2 Olympic weeks in Milan (and the other sites) with just another average soccer world cup
    • Strong teams advance from the groups, especially since there are now 48 teams playing at the World Cup, not 32. It's Italy's fault that they lost 0-3 and 1-4 to Norway.
