Appalling night overnight. Has anything significant gone GB’s way so far? Does not feel like it. The Target of 45 medals slips further and further away.

Emma WIlson is guaranteed a medal in the women's windsurfing.

Going into the medal race the top three are so far ahead only they can win the medals.

China - 30 pts

GB - 34 pts

France - 36 pts

Double pts are awarded in the medal race.

Matt Coward-Holley will be shooting for a medal in the final of the men's trap shortly.

Yes, lots.

We're continuing to do well in most of the sailing classes. Our boxers continue to win. As mentioned above Howard-Colley has qualified for the men's trap final. Both Kye Whyte and Beth Shriever comfortably qualified for the semi-finals of the BMX racing. The men's hockey team guaranteed their spot in the quarter-finals by achieving a comeback draw against the Netherlands after their prospects had been threatened by South Africa's shock win over Germany. The women's rugby 7s team came from behind to beat the ROC with the last play of the game. Paul Casey is well placed in the golf tournament after an opening round of 67 and Tommy Fleetwood was also going well when play was interrupted by the weather.

Shall I go on?

Good results for Mallory and Matthew in their events.

I am feeling reasonably confident Athens and Sydney will be beaten (at least in terms of total medals) but I think all those fourth places have dented the chances of getting to 45 and especially 52 to beat Bejing even with Sailing, Boxing and Swimming and maybe Equestrian still in with a good chance of beating their Rio medal hauls.

Apparently GB rowing privately targeted four to six medals. With only one - and only two outside chances remaining for more- they seem to The big cut in funding Swimming got after 2012 brought a fantastic recovery for the team and a lot of people are already predating a big improvement in Paris but who knows - the internal problems look set to continue.

Looking like GB women swimmers might fail to medal in a individual race for the first time since 2004 with only a few outside chances left - the best chance of two gb females getting a swimming medal is in the mixed relay.

After today's racing in the sailing.

Men

RS:X            6th after 12/12 races

Laser           12th after 8/10

Finn             1st after 6/10

470             2nd after 4/10

49er            1st after 6/12

Women

RS:X            2nd after 12/12

Laser R.      10th after 8/10

470             2nd after 4/10

49erFX       1st after 6/12

Mixed

Nacra          2nd after 6/12

Medal races not included in race totals.

Still a long way to go but currently in either first or second place in seven classes. Giles Scott after two 9th place finishes has had four straight wins. Could still be a sixth gold medal in a row in the Finn class.

One of Molly Renshaw or Abbie Wood will medal in the 200 Breast.

If don't believe that first sentence for one moment. It defies all rationality and all the evidence of the last Olympic cycle. Even with much stronger squads in 2012 and 2016 they were always reluctant to predict that degree of success and rightly so.

The prophet of doom and gloom wouldn't be happy if he or she couldn't find something negative to say. The swimming squad is setting all sorts of records in Tokyo but instead he/she chooses to highlight a potentially negative one.

    • I still shocks, that a country of 4-5 million inhabitants? can be a powerhouse in almost every winter sport + handball, football (most recently with Haaland) and athletics: Ingebrigtsen, Warholm, etc. With such a small population, they can't be missing out on any major talent, surely? This must be the best training system in the world...
    • FIFA announced the stadium and time for each match   for  Iran, it will be 2 matches in LA (and not just 1) and 1 in Seattle and luckily we avoided playing in Canada. absolutely nothing against the country, but there are just too many douchebag Iranian groups in Vancouver trying to mix everything with their stupid politics. it's better to stay away from them.   that can happen in US too but less likely. playing in LA is more like playing at home, at least I hope so. 2022 Qatar was a disaster from our point of view, hopefully this one remains only about football.
