IIHF Continental Cup 2017/18

1st Round in Belgrade (SRB)

Final Day Schedule (1st October 2017)

GMT +2

13:30  Esja Reykjavik :ISL vs :TUR Zeytinburnu Istanbul

17:00  Irbis-Skate Sofia :BUL vs :SRB Crvena Zvezda Belgrade

* CZ Belgrade need one single point tomorrow against Sofia to complete their triumph in this tournament and qualify for the second round. Sofia in case of win in regular time and a help of Reykjavik will win the group, Istanbul in case of win in regular time must hope for a win of Sofia also in regular time and then we will have to proceed via the mini-table of the 3 teams according to the tie-break formula. A interesting situation may occur if Sofia defeat Belgrade by 4-3 in regular time and Istanbul will beat Reykjavik in regular time, all 3 teams will have 6 points in the mini-table and goal average 7-7 :d

1st Round

Brasov next up for Crvena Zvezda Belgrade

An overtime win on the final day propelled Crvena Zvezda Belgrade to the Second Round of the Continental Cup.

Following plenty of hard graft and a few nervy moments Crvena Zvezda Belgrade won qualification to the Second Round of the Continental Cup.

Group A, played in Belgrade's Hala Pionir became a fine showcase for the Continental Cup, a tournament now entering its third decade. The first round of games were competitive from start to finish, capping off with a nail-biting final game that saw the home supporters go home happy as Crvena Zvezda won on home ice in extra time.

Crvena Zvezda first brushed aside newcomers Esja Reykjavik 6-1 and then followed it up by edging Turkish champions Zeitinburnu Istanbul 4-3. Their final game was a tense one against Irbis-Skate Sofia, before a late leveller saw them seal the tournament victory 5-4 in overtime.

"The goal for our team was to finish first and that's what we did," said Crvena Zvezda head coach Igor Krivoshlyk following his team's Group A win. "The players all play with their hearts and that's the main strength with our team."

Crvena Zvezda now moves into the Second round of the Continental Cup played in neighbouring Romania between 20-22 October where hosts Corona Brasov, DVTK Jegesmedvek Miskolc from Hungary and Spain's reigning champions Txuri Urdin San Sebastian awaits.

With 15:37 left of the final game of Group A, a fine piece of individual skill saw Irbis-Skate Sofia's Alexei Yotov round the cage of Arsenije Rankovic before firing home a high shot past the Crvena Zvezda netminder to silence the home crowd.

The 4-3 goal meant the Bulgarians had not only turned the game, but also now were in the driving seat for a place in the next round. Right until then things had gone according to the script for the hosts in their final game against the Bulgarian champions Irbis-Skate Sofia. Twice had they been in possession of a two-goal cushion before they now all of a sudden were forced to start chasing a goal.

Starting to look hesitant and anxious as time ran passed, Crvena Zvezda capitalised on their big chance with 3:05 left of the game. With Irbis-Skate Sofia's Makar Perminov serving a tripping call, Crvena Zvezda head coach Krivoshlyk called a timeout. Rankovic was pulled for the extra attacker, and only seven seconds later Nemanja Vucurevic reacted fastest on a loose puck to score his second for the evening to get the home crowd on their feet.

The tournament top scorer, David Sefic then netted an overtime winner at 62:06 with the Serbs finishing top and Bulgaria's participants finishing third.

Zeitinburnu Istanbul wrote Turkish ice hockey history last year when finishing top at the first round of the Continental Cup, before they were forced to withdraw from participating at the next hurdle.

In Belgrade they once again had their sights set on finishing on a high note. In their opener they were trailing 3-1 against Irbis-Skate Sofia, but fought back and with 3:22 left of the final frame they surged ahead to a 4-3 lead with their game winning goal scored by influential Turkish national team player Serkan Gumus. Against Crvena Zvezda, they showed resilience as it was once again Gumus who got Zeitinburnu Istanbul back level, before a late rally by Crvena Zvezda finally downed the Turkish champions 4-3.

"We had been hoping to win, but we also have a lot of young players on our team, so next year we will have more experience and then need to work even harder," said Gumus after Zeitinburnu Istanbul's second place finish.

Celebrating their inaugural domestic championship title last spring, Esja from Iceland's capital Reykjavik had arrived to Belgrade as Iceland's first ever Continental Cup participant. They received a harsh introduction to their new surroundings being overpowered 6-1 by Crvena Zvezda while being outshot by 16-38.

"We were not good against Red Star (Crvena Zvezda). We were a little uncertain in our game and I think we respected them a little bit too much, but I think we played the last couple of games well." said head coach Gauti Thormodsson as Esja Reykjavik got their first Continental Cup point on board in their final match, losing after penalty shots against Zeitinburnu Istanbul.

"Full credit to the players who worked hard. We had no idea of the level of the opponents, but the overall experience for our club is great and with a little bit of luck and a bit more experience we could have done better," said Thormodsson.

Crvena Zvezda has less than three weeks to prepare before travelling to the next round in Brasov, where  in the Transylvanian part of Romania they be re-acquainted with many familiar opponents from last season. With the chunk of the Crvena Zvezda roster having represented HK Beograd in league play against their upcoming Hungarian and Romanian opponents, they will be well aware of the quality facing them when stepping up a level in the Continental Cup.

"Every team wants to win and we believe we can have good results in the next round," said Crvena Zvezda's head coach Igor Krivoshlyk ahead of what is come. "But if we want to be competitive there, we will have lots to improve in every aspects of our game before that."

Most of the country like to pretend it's 1936 at the moment so we've decided to play ice hockey like we did then :yikes:

Well, hopefully we are not returning back to these dark times :p but anyway I´m noticing your ice hockey in general is really going up in a extreme "high speed mode" last 2-3 years. Looks your federation is doing a very good job.

    • For Ghiotto to win 2 golds at the Olympics, he would have to be the second van der Poel or Sablikova in they pick of form. You have to be a genius to beat this whole coalition of Norwegians, Dutchmen etc. However, I don't see that much talent in him. I'd like to be wrong, but I'm afraid that he'll end up with some silver-bronze in the 10 km and that's it. If he starts losing to Eitrem now, who is 22 years old, it won't bode well for the future, and there's also Roest + maybe another Dutchman will jump out. Generally, our team is poorly prepared for this season and it's not like Ghiotto is on individual training on the moon and has just come down to earth and will now win everything while the rest of the team are in terrible form. Of course, the lack of form of Bosa or Trentini means e.g. 20th place, not 10th, but for Ghiotto it could mean 4/5 place, instead of 1st. It's the same with the team. For today, the only positive performance for us is Lollobrigida's 2nd place in the b category of the women's 1500 meters and Fontana's solid performance in the same event. The rest is terrible.
    • Costantini & Mosaner will back to play together for the frist time since Beijing 2022 Our NOC and Federation do an amazing work.
    • Right now I’m watching Scotland-Switzerland at the European Curling Championships, even though Germany-Norway would probably be a more interesting game… (can’t find any streaming options for it)   At 4:00am Scotland-Italy in the women’s bronze medal match, and at 9:00am TBD-TBD in the men’s bronze medal match   We’ll see if I’ll have enough time for the Davis Cup, Women’s/Men’s Slalom WC Gurgul, Skeleton WC Yanqing, BPT Challenge Chennai, BWF China Masters, WTT Finals Fukuoka, GSOC Kioti National, Freestyle Skiing WC Beijing, Alpine Skiing WC Killington, Moguls WC Ruka   Also will be following along with the Canadian Curling Olympic Mixed Doubles Qualifier, UCI Champions League Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Open Water WC Neom, Luge WC Lillehammer/Cross Country WC Ruka, Ski Jumping WC Ruka   Friday (November 22) 4:30 PM: NBA - Warriors v. • As far as I am concerned, there are two very simple problems: infrastructure and the lack of cooperation between sports federations. Let me explain. The MiCo2026 Olympics will provide virtually no legacy in ice sports, there is still a lack of an indoor hall, there is no federal centre that has been promised for so many years. It could have been an opportunity to make a nice roof in Baselga di Pinè, but instead they preferred to make temporary facilities in Rho.   The second problem is the total lack of cooperation between roller skating and speed skating, we have a huge pool and we are not exploiting it. Fortunately we are doing a few small collegiate events, the technical collaboration with the Netherlands absolutely must be exploited.   I am not so negative however about the current situation, Ghiotto practically on the 10k seems to be off the scale (watch out for the Czech and Norwegian) and he can medal in the 5k and drag the pursuit team. In the mass start you have more cards in both the men's and women's, let's see what Fontana does. And a Fontana-Peveri-Lollobrigida pursuit team can also play for a third place
    • Canada Team Size Prediction for Winter Olympic Games 2026 Milano Cortina   Ski Sports   Alpine Skiing  (13) - That's been the team size the last couple of Olympics so it's a safe bet again. Cross Country Skiing  (10) - Not too familiar with the qualification system. Probably around 6 men and 4 women. Ski Jumping  (5) - Loutitt, Strate and Maurer for sure on the women's side. Possibly a 4th will qualify. On the men's side, if Bowd-Clowes returns, then he should also qualify. Nordic Combined  (0) - Been a nonexistent sport for a while. No athletes competing in the World Cup or Continental Cup. Freestyle Skiing  (32) - Should qualify a team in mixed aerials which means a maximum team size of 32 athletes. Which athletes in which disciplines to be determined. Snowboarding  (24) - Full teams in slopestyle and big air. Then somewhere between 1-4 athletes in the other disciplines. Biathlon  (6) - Based on the Nations Cup last year, the men finished outside the top 20 and wouldn't qualify a relay team (and that's without Russia and Belarus). With Christian Gow's retirement, that makes things even more difficult. Women's relay should still qualify though. Ski Mountaineering  (1) - Gonna be optimistic here and say that one athlete will qualify either through the World Rankings or continental quota.     Skating Sports   Speed Skating  (16) - 7 to 8 men, 8 to 9 women. For now, I'll say 8 of each gender. Short Track Speed Skating  (10) - Full team size. With the current skill level of the team, anything else would be a tragedy. Figure Skating  (12) - Most likely 1 man (I hope) and 1 woman, then 2-3 pairs and 2-3 ice dance couples. For now, let's say 2 in pairs and 3 in ice dance.     Sleigh Sports   Luge  (7) - 2 women + 1 entry in each of the other disciplines Skeleton  (4) - 1 or 2 men + 2 or 3 women Bobsleigh  (14) - 2 men's crews (in both events) and 3 women's crews (in both events)     Team Sports   Curling  (12) - Full team or else you might as well burn the federation to the ground. Ice Hockey  (48) - Both men's and women's teams already qualified       Total Optimistic Prediction  -  (229) Total Pessimistic Prediction  - (184)   Total Realistic Prediction  -  (214)
    • Besides, I think Eitrem will be better than Ghiotto. You can see it after 1500 meters. He is younger. The whole Norwegian team is also in great shape. You just have to look at the team Norway has, how many new and young skaters there are and in our group A there is one Trentini, who takes last place. In every winter sport we invest too little money to be counted.   If Eitrem has the same form over long distances as he does over 1500 metres, he will dominate this season, not Ghiotto or Roest.
    • Looking at last season's 1st World Cup, it's worse for now and it should be the other way around. Bosa out of shape, Trentini weak. Both will drop to a lower group. It's similar to skeleton, i.e. regression instead of progress. I hope this doesn't mean Ghiotto is also in weaker form, because it could end up with 0 podiums this weekend.
    • In general, our picture for a little over 1 year until the home games looks like this:     - the women's sector is still based on one Lollo, who is 3 years older than 2022, - the women's and men's sprint sector is based on one Bosa and possibly the young Pergher (0% possobility for medal in 2026), - Ghiotto has made a lot of progress and that is a big plus. He could result to give our even 3 medals, including 1/2 gold. Our team's performance also depends to a large extent on Ghiotto's form, - the rest of the men's team is basically unchanged. There is Giovannoni in the mass start, there is Malfatti in the longer distances, but they are not competitors on the podium of a major event.   I will repeat myself: if Ghiotto continues to make such progress, we will probably win 3 medals, 2 of which gold and it will be a success. If something doesn`t work out, an injury, illness, etc. (we know from Vitozzi that this can happen to anyone), then it could be very bad. By the way, this also applies to other sports: the above-mentioned Vitozzi in biathlon, Goggia in downhill, Brignone in giant slalom, etc.
    • With the World Cup season in most of the winter sports about to begin and qualification in some sports already underway, I think it's about time for this thread.    Template    ...
