So… news from the EB. Some Milan 2026 events got changed at the request of the FIS.

  • Cross Country Skiing: all men’s and women’s events contested over the same distance
  • Alpine Skiing: the combined is now a team event (one downhiller and one slalom specialist)
  • Nordic Combined: the team event is replaced by the team sprint (LH/2x7.5km)
  • Ski Jumping: the men’s team event is replaced by the so-called super team event with two athletes per team.

hate the new ski jumping team event format. IMO the worst change the IOC has made to the Winter Olympics since I started following.

I hate it too and do not understand. We have around 6 team competition during season. It Is the one of the most attractive competition and they will  replace it by this shit?

The change in Nordic Combined was needed otherwise there would be too low amount of nations competing. The IOC would use that to kick the sport of the program. Ski jumping 12*4 would =48/50 quotas, so that change had to be made too.

It’s easier on the quota distribution likely. If they lower the max per NOC now, we shouldn’t lose too many nations.

Can't kill something, that's already dead.

Ski jumping is shrinking with every season. Finland and Czech Republic are dead in the sport and minnows will always be minnows. I'm not surprised team event has been cut down to duets, FIS has no idea how to inject life into this sport and the recent cutdown of team quota in World Cup is pure desperation hoping that minnows will suddenly score points if Top 6 nations will have fewer eligible athletes.

I wonder when ski jumping will be axed from the Olympics and replaced by breakdance on snow/ice?

It’s probably fine for the time being. Ski Jumping still enjoys higher participation then some of the more niche freestyle events cough *aerials* cough.

It would be great as Lithuania might finally win their first winter Olympic medal.... If we could also remove luge and replace it with basketball on snow - it would be highly appreciated :p

    • It’s honestly baffling how bad she was in 2018. Just absolutely lost her head. Real shame too because she is so gifted. I do hope Li Jianrou sends her a Christmas card every year tho, she was absolutely gifted a gold medal by Christie in 2014.
    • Oh I’m not done yet, unfortunately. From the names that could be back but are still injured   Courtney Hoffos Mikael Kingsbury (should be back before the Olympics) Connor Howe (he returned, but nowhere close to his best so his injury is still giving him issues) Connor Bedard Meryeta O’Dine Megan Oldham
    • Italy also has its own list, although of course not every injury is as terribile  in terms of medal losses. In winter sports have unfortunately much more injuries than summer sports. In the summer only: cycling, volleyball and football.     - Brignone: will return in January, - Tabanelli: will return for the Olympics, - Bassino: season over, - Marta Rossetti: season over, - Lara Malsinier: season over.
    • TNT staff expect they will offer it at a price similar to what they offering the Winter Olympics for rather than the full TNT price.   But equally the main coverage is apparently going to be very different to what they do for the Olympics (Which is less pundits and studio chat than the BBC) with speculation it might be based on NBC’s Olympic coverage with tons of human interest etc.
    • India Sherret (ski cross)   Another name to the ever-growing list of injuries for the Canadian team… used to be excited for the Olympics, now not so much…
