no that's not true. Wrestling, Golf and Rugby they are all core sports. they are all 100% safe for 2024. the only core sport which is not safe is Weightlifting. (and now boxing)

they dropped wrestling once but then wrestling had a competition with some other sports like Squash to get its place back as a core  sport.

Oh, ok. Some sport still will likely replace boxing then.

Nevermind, I guess I don’t know what I’m talking about.

No, wrestling wasn't voted a core sport then - the 25 core sports for Tokyo 2020 were voted en bloc, as the Olympic Charter said, thus the EB proposal of voting wrestling as an additional sport together with squash and baseball/softball, with the happy end for wrestling for 2020 and 2024, as well as rugby 7 and golf were voted additional for 2016 and 2020, so they weren't proposed to core sports nor the additional sports.

I checked the Olympic Charter archive - in Buenos Aires in 2013, when the Charter from 2011 was in force, there was this term of "sports core" consisting of 25 sports, this wasn't changed during Session in Buenos Aires, but the next version, from the 2015, already hasn't the term "sports core" (it was BLR 45.2 for summer and BLR 45.3 for winter).

So this discussion is in fact all about history.

  • 1 month later...

A few bits about Paris additionnal sports in today's l'Equipe.

  • 5 sports max, IOC is pushing for less
  • Domestic popularity is not a priority anymore
  • First list will be sent by Paris 2024 next month (no more sports could be added after that), will be released during IOC next session (June).
  • Only  ~10 sports really stand a chance : The five from Tokyo, wakeboarding, squash, wushu, bowling, pétanque and billard

They also confirm that additional sports will have to fit with the Paris 2024 venues map and that the additional sports quotas will have to fit under the 10 500 overall athletes quotas (Baseball beeing :nopompom:)

Juste maintenant , heywoodu a déclaré:

Yay for bowling

Boooo for wushu

Karate, TWD, Judo, Wushu at the same olympics. So much fun. :nopompom:

Thankfully, I don't believe they will be chosen. Global youth appeal sounds like it will be the main critera from now on.

What do you think the chances are of baseball/softball being retained for 2024?

Small, unfortunately. They were allready small to start with, but with additional sports quotas counting in the overall sport quotas* their chances are severely reduced (or of any other team sport for that matter).

The venue is also an issue. The french federation do have a plan for a national stadium, but it's in another part of Paris, it doesn't fit with other venues at all.

A month ago, there was a rumour that baseball5 could be pushed over baseball/softball, probably because of these two reasons.

*It won't be the case in Tokyo

So obviously pétanque and billiards.

Spoiler

And bowling, judging by the fact we were surrounded by 95% screaming 6-year olds when going to the bowling alley a few days ago.

    • and after  we got the scalp of  in a World Cup warm-up match played in  Dubai    once again, it was a late surge with the bats, finishing with a 6 by Zain Ali at the very last ball (when we needed a 4 to tie and a 5 to win the match)    final score:  167/7 (20 overs) b.  165/7 (20 overs)
    • China's medal prospects   Short Track Speed Skating: This is the event with the deepest emotional ties to China's winter sports, as China's first Olympic gold medal in winter sports came from this discipline. Unsurprisingly, people have high expectations for it in this Winter Olympics. Medal prospects are mainly focused on men's individual events and the two relay events. However, considering the strong strength of William Dandjinou, I think the probability of winning gold in men's individual events is very low. Instead, the main gold medal hopes lie in the men's relay and mixed relay. Medals: 1-3. My guess: 1 gold; Optimistic: 2 golds   Freestyle Skiing: The performance of this event is crucial to China's success in this Winter Olympics. Eileen Gu remains our super star and is highly competitive in slopestyle and halfpipe. As for the big air, if I remember correctly, she hasn't competed in this event since the Beijing Winter Olympics, so it's hard for me to make a clear judgment on her performance in this individual event. China has the potential to compete for medals or even gold in all three medal events of freestyle skiing aerials. However, given the unpredictability of aerials, the results could be either disastrous or brilliant. Xu Mengtao will compete in her fifth Winter Olympics. Medals: 3-6. My guess: 3 golds; Optimistic: 4 golds   Speed Skating: Similar to the situation in Beijing, the medal hopes still lie with Gao Tingyu and Ning Zhongyan. However, Stolz has shown extremely strong dominance during the Milan Olympic cycle, so I don't think there will be any gold medals in this event. Gao Tingyu has performed excellently in the previous two Winter Olympics, and I still believe he can win a medal in the 500m. Ning Zhongyan also has the potential to win medals in the 1000m and 1500m. Medals: 1-3. My guess: 0 gold; Optimistic: 0 gold   Snowboard: Like in Beijing, Su Yiming remains the star of China's snowboarding. He has maintained a very good competitive form this season, with great chances especially in the big air event, where he will aim to defend his title. He also has the potential to win a medal in slopestyle. Medals: 1-2. My guess: 1 gold; Optimistic: 1 gold   Skeleton: Men's events and mixed team events are opportunities to compete for medals, with Yin Zheng being the key athlete for medal contention. Medals: 1-2. My guess: 0 gold; Optimistic: 1 gold   Curling: China will send both men's and women's teams to this event. Both teams have the ability to compete with high-level strong teams. I predict that either the men's or women's team will reach the top four. Medals: 0-1. My guess: 0 golds; Optimistic: 0 golds   Ski Jumping: This is still a less developed event for China, but Zeng Ping has made significant progress this season, entering the top 8 in many high-level competitions. There is a chance to compete for a medal, but it will be very difficult to achieve. If it really happens, I think it will be quite incredible. Medals: 0-1   I think other events have no chance of winning medals.   summary, Optimistic: 8 golds and 17 medals;  My guess: 5 golds and 14 medals;  Worst-case scenario: 3 golds and 11 medals.
    • we're in Italy! calm down and relax...   everything necessary will appear when it will appear, possibly at least a few hours before the action starts (but don't get mad if it's a few days after the Games are underway)   pure Italian style
    • So tomorrow, the girls will made a protest prior to the mass start for the not-inclusion of Women Nordic Combined into the Olympics   I mean, yeah IOC and FIS have a point that the sport has so few medalled nations in the last decades, but in other hands they still keep in the olympics sports like Equestrian, diving or table tennis where even less nations medal for almost centuries now
    • I was just doing my prediction on the other thread, and then I calculated... I had 21 Gold, 8 Silver, 15 Bronze.  Probably a little too hopeful.   Oops!  (And I didn't even think I was being too optimistic as I was filling it out...guess so...)
    • This should be included in the Olympics soon. Every single event that’s added to the program is a positive thing.
