Equestrian at the Summer Olympic Games 2020

Canadian eventing is admittedly at a low point right now, but Jessica Phoenix & Pavarotti is such an odd selection.

Pavarotti is an excellent horse for the 3* events (Guadalajara 2011, Toronto 2015), but he never really found his groove at 4*/5* events (a statement backed up by the fact that Phoenix competed on different horses in 2012/2016, even though she won individual Pan Am medals on Pavarotti in 2011/2015).

 

And now they go to the Olympics at advanced age?? I can't fathom it. Karl Slezak is perhaps a little iffy (rider fall at Kentucky this spring), but both Hawley Bennett-Awad and Lisa Marie Ferguson would have been more sensible choices.

 

A clean jumper (with Tryon 2018 being a major blip), but always far away from the optimum time.

Entry list for dressage shows 37 women and 23 men, which is slightly more equal than in 2016 (39 W + 21 M).

 

Eventing has 42 men and 23 women (Rio 2016 - 43 M + 22 W).

 

As ever, jumping will be by far the most imbalanced of the three disciplines, 63-64 M and 11-12 W according to the current entries (Rio 2016 - 62 M + 13 W).

 

In total that's 128-129 M + 71-72 W.

 

I can't stress enough though that nobody in the equestrian circles pays much attention to these numbers. It is very much a gender-blind sport.

Looks like the selectors left only one spot for those less experienced. I would have preferred to see Lucy Deslauriers, and especially Brian Moggre, but these two ended up as picks #5-6.

and of course the news was reported also by the Italian newspapers that never write about sport in general (not to mention Equestrian in particular) only because of her family name... 

 

p.s. I'd have liked to see also his life mate (Lorenzo De Luca, for those who don't know that) among the starters in Tokyo, but Italy first threw the team qualification away with crazy selections at the qualifying events, then they decided to blow him individually...

It also specifies the horse. Do they allow to change the horse after arriving Japan and make decisions based the condition then?

No, only one horse per athlete can fly to Japan. Four athletes per team can go, but once in Japan, any swap would have to be athlete1/horse1 <-> athlete2/horse2.

 

Several athletes have entered the quarantine with multiple horses, and some of them will basically wait until the last minute to decide who will board the plane.
