Tournament Format

PRELIMINARY ROUND

16 Teams are divided into 2 Preliminary Round Groups A and B.

In both groups every team will play once each opponent of his group, so every team will play at least 7 matches at the world championships.

For every win in Regulation Time (60 minutes divided in 3x20 minutes periods) the team will be awarded by 3 points to the group table standing, the losing team will not receive any point (0 points).

Every match must have a winner, so if the game will be still tied after 60 minutes of Regulation Time, a 5 minutes "Sudden death" Overtime will follow (played by 3 vs 3 players), the team which score a goal in the overtime is declared winner and the match is automatically ended, if even after the 5 mintes Overtime the result remains still tied, there a Shoot-Out procedure that must decide the game with a series of 5 vs 5 attempts, if the result remains undecided the Shoot-Out procedure continue with a 1 vs 1 attempts direct KO until the result will be decided. the winner after OT or GWS will be awarded by 2 points, the losing team after OT/GWS will receive 1 point from this game.

The tie-breaking system for two teams with the same number of points in a standing will be the direct head to head confrontation game between the two teams, the winner of the game taking precedence.

Due to the fact that the three-point system does not allow a game to end in a tie, then the following tie breaking procedure is applicable when three or more teams are tied in points in a Championship standing.

Should three or more teams be tied on points, then a tie breaking formula will be applied as follows, creating a sub-group amongst the tied teams. This process will continue until only two or none of the teams remain tied. In the case of two tied teams remaining, the game between the two would then be the determining tie-breaker as the game could not end as a tie.

The top 4 teams from both groups will qualify for the Quarterfinals.

The tournament will be over after the preliminary round for all teams ranked 5th to 8th from both groups, with the final ranking decided following their positions in the group, 5th teams will be ranked 9th and 10th, 6th teams ranked 11th and 12th., the 7th teams will be ranked 13th and 14th and the last teams from both groups will be ranked 15th and 16th.

RELEGATION

8th Ranked teams from both Preliminary Round Groups will be relegated to next years Division I Group A and will be replaced next year by Great Britain and Italy, freshly promoted countries from this years Div I A tournament held last week in Hungary.

IMPORTANT: Slovakia has the Immunity this year !!! thus if Slovakia will finish last in its group and thus among the overall bottom ranked two teams, the overall ranked 14th-placed team would be relegated instead.

KNOCK-OUT ROUND

As explained the top 4 teams from both groups will qualify for the Quarterfinals,

The teams will be paired by cross-over system from the groups, Winner of Group A vs 4th of Group B, 2nsdo g Group A vs 3rd of Group B, 2nd Groups B vs 3rd of Group A and 1st of Group B vs 4th of Group A.

the winners of the quarterfinals will qualify for the Semifinals, The winning teams of the semi-final games advance to the gold medal game while the semi-final losing teams play for bronze.

In the Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Bronze Medal match, the "Sudden death" Overtime is played 10 minutes with 4 vs 4 Players,

In the Gold Medal Game, the "Sudden death" Overtime is played 20 minutes with 4 vs 4 players
