Well, now we know why :BLR Belarus declined their Tokyo qualification in dressage.

Olga Safronova is anti-Lukashenko, so the state-sponsored veterinarians deemed her horse unfit for Tokyo and thus ended her dream. She has defected to Poland since.

:GER Isabell Werth has announced she plans to retire after Paris.

Should she win one gold medal there, she would become the 6th most decorated Olympian of all time.

And with two golds, she would potentially climb to 3rd all-time, behind Phelps and Latynina...

On the sidenote, I stumbled onto this today which finally confirms beyond any doubt that it was a simple, dumb mistake which prevented a Slovak equestrian debut in Tokyo.:(

But... Floretto appears to be his second iron for Paris, and quite a promising one so far... It's already officially listed as Slovak-owned so no worries there.

CHIO Aachen is being held this week.

:USA Will Coleman won the eventing aboard Off the Record. They also helped Team USA to the second place finish, just 0.3 penalties behind Gee Bee.

Sure, not the strongest Aachen (usually it's held in July), but this is a pretty significant result for the USA. Easily the biggest success in a very, very long time (10+ years) for this once powerhouse of a nation...

Standings after dressage at the European Championships...

Individual - https://live.rechenstelle.de/2021/avenches_09/leaderboard01.html

Team - https://live.rechenstelle.de/2021/avenches_09/nationcup01.html

Absolutely hilarious scores. It's almost as if these athletes peaked for the scrapped-up European Championships instead of the Olympics. :yikes: :roflmao: Eventing dressage is nuts.

Hopefully the cross-country will be at least somewhat challenging, but I am not exactly holding my hopes up given some recent championships...

I don't know about the other countries but none of the British competitors were in the team that won the Olympic gold medal so maybe they really did peak for the EC. 馃槉

:USA Boyd Martin beats :GBR Oliver Townend by 0.1 pens to win the inaugural Maryland 5* !

First American winner of a five-star event since 2008. What a crazy couple of months for the American eventing. It's a renaissance officially.

Riesebeck will host the 2023 European Dressage Championships, meaning Germany will get to host it twice in a row.

Normally, the Iberian peninsula would have been the prime candidate, but both Spain and Portugal withdrew their bids late in the process, so there you go.

    • The problem is XD is a fun event, but its essentially a social event, and lags far behind the others both at Grand Slams and Olympics - no quotas of its own, very limited prize money - as the indivisual Olympic tennis has got more and more important, the top players have limited thhier doubles participation to the main M and W D.   a team format, however, gets some fo that BJK/Davis cup magic, and because it'll b enovel, they can REALLY mess around with it - for example, a three set match could consists of MS first set, WS second and, if needed mixed doubles decider - light work load and quick competition. could play three matches a day if needed   Would not be incredibly shocked if BOTH golf and tennis adopted a quickfire 'Olympic' format - Singles, singles, doubles - (In golf it would be 9 hole matchplay with sets replaced with 9 hole matches, and the order men's indi, women's indi, mixed foursome   On Compound, nice to see it but odd too for GB - Ella Gibson is one of the outstanding shooters of her time, but GBR don't seem to have a male compound shooter worth a candle   On voluntary team sports (Flag football, cricket, lacrosse) I smell a rankings heavy approach with continental rep limited to 3 - though they may be real sneaky with cricket and go host (USA), Euro 1(GBR), Oceania 1(Aus), Asia (1)(India) Africa 1(South Africa) and Final Qualifier 1, heavily loaded with Asia and West Indies individual teams, perhaps Ireland and New Zealand for the appearance of balance.   The Iroquois question still unresolved. GBR would be a rankings pick in everything bar men's flag football   Wonder about the Team gymnastics - Super quick fire high peril format maybe of just one gymnast per apparatus, with the floor and vault reserved to the women so each sex provide only 4 scores - would make it feel different to the existing team events, and make USA a less guaranteed gold. Qualifiation by highest score in overall Q in each event - even if that score comes from same athlete in multiple events

    • https://worldboxing.org/ioc-confirms-gender-parity-in-boxing-at-la28-with-seven-weight-classes-for-both-men-and-women/       Well I didn't see this coming but eh world boxing have gotten rid of men's flyweight!!!!! Non Olympics weights are now 50kg, 75kg and 85kg for the men and 48kg, 80kg and 80+kg for the women. I think it is good news that they haven't added womens heavyweight but men's flyweight being gone is a shocker especially for "smaller" nations. In Rio like we had both 49 and 52kg below 56kg but now flyweight is gone completely. I mean it is tricky to have 10 weightclasses and then have only 7 for the Olympics and for both the 10 and the 7 to be evenly spaced out but like im very surprised that its flyweight thats gone and not one of 55,60,65kg. To be honest selfishly from an Irish perspective at least for this cycle I don't hate it but flyweight was one of the most competitive divisions so it being gone will hurt the weaker (well i couldn't make the small joke twice) boxing countries.   Just for context the Paris weights were (M51, M57, M63.5, M71, M80, M92 and M92+ and then W50, W54, W57, W60, W66, W75)

    • That's why they only offered 750 points to the winner as an initial compromise. If you were the 4th/5th best player in your nation and were not selected due to NOC limits and you cared about points you would be better off competing at a different event at the same time. With a depleted field you'd likely earn more points there anyway.   It was more because ATP/WTA tournaments held at the same time were losing out on players and thus attendance for the tournaments were low.
