Boxing Qualification for Summer Olympic Games 2016

Recommended Posts

Sadly, it looks like Tajikistan is one of those small countries that is really struggling in Rio qualifications (along with Costa Rica for example...). They lost their London 2012 bronze medalist Chorieva today and their only remaining chance here is Qurbonov in -91kg... At the moment they still have only 1 athlete qualified (men's hammer throw) and it looks as though they will really struggle to come anywhere near the number of 16 athletes, which they had in 2012.

three Filipinos in semifinal :cheer:

edit: 4

I assume all four Filipino boxers are expected to join hurdler Eric Cray in the roster, and if this happens, our country will now have 5 athletes. Good luck to these boxers in the semis! Never lose hope!

OK, only 1 in semifinal , we officially suck in boxing, they are getting weaker and weaker every year, I wonder why I still follow this sport !

btw, I was following Mehrabi-MGL on live score and two judges scored all 3 round exact opposite of each other !! how is that even possible ?! are they watching the same bout ?

Interesting to note that South Korea is likely going to miss boxing for the first time ever. They used to be a great cheaters in that sport. :p

But they still have another chance to earn a spot at the AIBA Open Boxing Qualifier and the APB/WSB Olympic Tournament.

Uzbekistan qualified a full men's boxing team. :d +1 women, what makes them the biggest team so far.

Jordan surprisingly qualifies in men's super heavyweight. :)

Meanwhile, Tajikistan's horror story continues as Qurbonov fails to qualify. They had 4 boxers and 4 wrestlers in 2012 and now they have 0 in both after Asian qualifications. They might as well stay on 0.

    • It’s honestly baffling how bad she was in 2018. Just absolutely lost her head. Real shame too because she is so gifted. I do hope Li Jianrou sends her a Christmas card every year tho, she was absolutely gifted a gold medal by Christie in 2014.
    • Oh I’m not done yet, unfortunately. From the names that could be back but are still injured   Courtney Hoffos Mikael Kingsbury (should be back before the Olympics) Connor Howe (he returned, but nowhere close to his best so his injury is still giving him issues) Connor Bedard Meryeta O’Dine Megan Oldham
    • Italy also has its own list, although of course not every injury is as terribile  in terms of medal losses. In winter sports have unfortunately much more injuries than summer sports. In the summer only: cycling, volleyball and football.     - Brignone: will return in January, - Tabanelli: will return for the Olympics, - Bassino: season over, - Marta Rossetti: season over, - Lara Malsinier: season over.
    • TNT staff expect they will offer it at a price similar to what they offering the Winter Olympics for rather than the full TNT price.   But equally the main coverage is apparently going to be very different to what they do for the Olympics (Which is less pundits and studio chat than the BBC) with speculation it might be based on NBC’s Olympic coverage with tons of human interest etc.
    • India Sherret (ski cross)   Another name to the ever-growing list of injuries for the Canadian team… used to be excited for the Olympics, now not so much…
    • Voted  Thank you for extending the deadline and allowing me to vote once my exams are over. @OlympicIRL
