Short Track Speed Skating ISU World Tour 2025 - 2026

Canadian men out of the relay in the heats

This is why I'm so scared of what will happen in the Olympics. Could be 10 medals, could be none. Depends on the day. And Canadian skaters have a very long history of falling on the big stage (in every sport).

Short track isn't for the faint of heart. It's a bit scary that the success or failure of our Olympics will largely depend on this sport.

The last two Olympics were held in short track strongholds that had some.....interesting calls that sometimes hurt Canada (and some others). Sochi had its own problems, but Canadians could not stay on their feet after Hamelin won the first race. It was beyond normal limits for this sport. While crashes and bumps and calls are all part of the sport, I just hope it'll be cleaner in Italy next year, and the best skaters win most of the races. If Canadians stay on their skates 80% of the time, I'll be happy, win or lose.

We pretty much saw both extremes of this in Montreal last month. The first weekend, Dandjinou couldn't stay on his skates past his first win, while he dominated the next weekend. And all his falls were unforced, no one around him. There's falls. Then there's complete inability to do what you've practiced for the last 4 years suddenly. So fingers crossed.

Even with all these golds, I don’t trust us to perform that well at the Olympics. Very unpredictable sport, and both gender relays going out in the heats here in Gdansk is not a good sign…

The ice in Gdansk isn’t the smoothest…

Gdansk is known for having very particular ice, so you have to adapt. Europeans, who are more familiar with the rink, perhaps have a slight advantage.

    • It's hard to believe it was still in this calendar year
    • In last year, we were were happy with Brignone's wins, and today we're excite that della Mea is in the top 10... It's hard to imagine a bigger fall... And Goggia should give up on the giant slalom and focus on the speed events – Vonn isn't wasting time on the giant slalom, but is training for downhill and SG. Goggia last one finished on the podium in the giant slalom in march 2018, and she has no any chance of winning an Olympic medal at the regular competition. It's a waste of time and energy to finish 8th or 9th and risk injury. And we have to accept that without Brignone, we have no chance of winning a medal in the giant slalom in Cortina, and that's it.
    • yeah, just like Anna Trocker earlier Today   I think this is the best way to blow them    they're not ready for the world cup stage yet, but we're so bad right now that our coaches are digging deep
    • Some surprises and fun results so far at this year's Worlds. Like a few minutes ago, when  Harrysson made the 1/8 with another very good performance. Now he plays Jonny Clayton, who this afternoon made a stellar performance in a tough battle with Zonneveld. I don't see an easy match for Clayton, even though on paper he would have wished such an opponent for a 1/8 before the tournament.   Also i'm delighted that my fav Gary Anderson seems to be in good form, though at his age, he is prone to sudden bad matches at any time.
