This Iranian won gold, so maybe it was a premature final. Shame. I'm more concerned that, apart from Vito and Alessio, no youngsters are winning medals for us.

yes, we all knew that was the most difficult match on the road to the title, but still...it's how Dell'Aquila lost, not the fact that the Iranian guy won (it was possible according to a non biased preview)

about the youngsters, let's see what Mangione does, before saying anything

and OK, they didn't get a medal, but Matonti did quite well despite an impossible draw

the really disappointing result, to me, is Alessio's loss in the final, that could and should have been an easy gold for him

personally, I did expect a lot more also from Baretta, but tbh, he's not the talent some people say

and :CIV's silver is painful, as she really is a 100% Italian girl, but had to go to the parents' home Nation to be able to compete because of our stupid laws

One thing that I'm finding interesting as I look at historical taekwondo results is how many different NOCs earn medals.  So far this year, we've had 26 NOCs earn a medal out of 56 total medals (14 events), and the most golds won by any NOC is 2 (and 4 NOCs have done that).  In the past decade or so, it hasn't been the case that one country has dominated.  Rewind a few years, and South Korea has traditionally been on top (makes sense), but seems like the rest of the world has risen up.  (You see this somewhat in Men's table tennis, where many Europeans are joining the ranks of the Chinese.)

I know the :USA TKD coach has a big push to 'dominate' the LA28 games, but with only 2 bronze medals now, there's a long way to go in his mind, I'm sure.  Curious to see if there is any marked improvement in our program.

it has to be said that basically "this" taekwondo is almost a new sport, if compared to 20+ years ago

until the early 2000's it was an extremely rigged sport, it started to improve only since Beijing 2008 (more or less) and we call it a "regular" sport only in the last 10/12 years

however, yes...it's always nice to see how many Countries can develop good athletes capable of winning global medals (having 10 weight classes helps a lot, if they will be cut to only 6 per gender some things might change -like at the Olympics, where we only have 4 weight classes per gender)

Yes, 4 weight classes isn't a lot!

this tournament was about to become a total disaster but Zandi saved the day with his gold medal today. good tournament for him, winning the gold without losing a single round. still a very very poor tournament overall with only 2 medals with 1 day left.

I think our federation celebrated too much after the Olympic success (4 medals out of 4 athletes) if I'm not wrong our athletes only participated in one international tournament since Paris.

sometimes winning can be negative and that's exactly what happened to our Taekwondo after Paris. the federation president (former Olympic Champion Hadi Saei) got too much confident and appointed his own sister as the women's team head coach which is a complete disaster here. :facepalm:they are losing to anybody random in Wuxi.

I believe our men's team is still strong, but lack of competition was costly, they lost their sharpness, Salimi, Barkhordari and Yazdani lost matches they could won. specially Salimi, he lost to someone he can eat for the breakfast.

Another disappointment against an Iranian athlete... The difference is that the 2022 Iranian Junior World Champion won gold in an Olympic event yesterday, while our 2022 champion lost today in a non-Olympic category to an average Iranian. There's still no progress and young athletes from another countries are already winning medals here. We still hope on two athletes over 25 years old, so the 3rd Olympic cycle we based on the same 2 people.

The Iranian is actually a youth champion from a few years ago and is in great shape, technically very good. Mangione, unwatchable, on the other hand, did his job, beating the European champion Barrera. I think we can be happy. He went far beyond his potential.

Italy's results at this World Championships is very poor: one silver medal in the non-Olympic category for Alessio, Vito was left with nothing, and the rest of the team is making no progress. The young Iranian won gold yesterday and beat Vito, while we keep telling ourselves our team has time, etc. The result is that for the third consecutive cycle, we've been relying on two increasingly older champions, and we've traded our greatest young talent to Africa (just like we traded Colturi to Albania)... We're a country of losers.

We are unlucky with these Iranians, because with a different draw there would probably have been two more medals for us, but the fact is that we don`t train young people enough and we give away the best talents to other countries.

we didn't trade Ossin, she's always competed for :CIV since she can't get the Italian passport until she' 18 (more than a year from now, and nothing let us think that she chooses Italy once she's able to do it)
