If Stretovich really better Ignatiev, Russia will be able to compete for the gold in the team, not only for medals. And Stretovych will be a contender for the finals on uneven bars and horizontal bar. He was a month ago, won the Cup of Russia in these disciplines

I doubt that the russian team will compete for gold. I think they will fight for bronze against GB.

I also doubt that Stretovich will reach the uneven bars final or is he the Semenya of artistic gymnastics? :mumble:

I don't know what to expect from him, but Ignatyev is strong gymnast. And if he was changed to Stretovych, he can then "play" better.

Maybe Ignatyev was just in a bad shape? Last year your team was 2 points behind the silver medal and 2.5 points behind the gold medal. Why do you think that your team will be so much better, while at the same time GB and Japan wont improve? I just looked at the results from last year again and GB missed gold by only 0.5 points, although Bevan only scored 13.9 on pommel horse. I think it will GB and Japan will be even better this year, considering that Bevan and Wilson are much more experienced this year. I would say GB and Japan will fight for gold and China will be the favorite for bronze.

I'm not sure of the result, I just hope that Ignatyev was in great shape, but Stretovych was even better. Well Ablyazin, Kuksenkov can show a very good result for the team. The last European Championship showed that GB can win (even if they were only 3 and 2016 Olympian). I think Japan will win, but the winner is not known until the last athlete.

Epke Zonderland withdraws from the pommel horse and parallel bars because of "injured fingers". He'll do the horizontal bar only.

Let's help the guys on Insidethegames out in solving a mystery: who is this who falls in a bit painful way? Or at least, which nation is it?

Quick question: do you need to have 4 gymnasts per apparatus in order to have a valid result in the team event?

No. Four gymnasts permorm on each apparatus, but only the best three results are counted for the team. If only three permorm, then all performances count. Kind of same as in equestrian team events.

I'm also curious what our gymnastics expert @thiago_simoes thinks about this :p

I'm not sure, but I think it doesn't make much of a difference. Russia's ambitions in the men's team event should be aiming for a bronze medal. Gold and silver are set for Japan and China, while Great Britain and the United States are more likely to fight for the bronze medal, with Ukraine as a dark horse. Right now, I think Russia is even behind the dark horse level.

I think the US wins the most medals, but Norway tops the standings (most golds)... have Germany neck-and-neck with Norway for medals, but fewer gold.    Then have Canada and Italy fighting it out for 4th in 5th   Then have Sweden, Austrian, Japan, Netherlands and France rounding out the top ten, with them all within a medal or two of each other. Of course reality will differ significantly
    • A huge day for the very young Italian Bertini: despite a very tough draw, he beats Szilagy in the round of 16 and Gu in the quarterfinals! First career podium for him!
    • Time for more personal and detailed predictions:    will have it hard this time.   I'm trying to stay realistic about our chances. We're not going there as favorites in most events, and deep down I know it would be a big surprise if we suddenly overperformed or even dominated. Still, sports have a beautiful way of ignoring expectations.   We're never predicted to do amazingly well at either edition of the Olympics, so I’m desperately hoping for moments that will stay with everyone in the country for years, whether it's a final that keeps people glued to their screens or a performance that will make us proud. Just one medal could mean so much. It would bring real emotions and something to cheer for to a country that isn’t going through its best period right now. And on the rare occasion of a hockey miracle, celebrations in the streets wouldn't be an oddity.   It all comes down to four sports, the rest are out of reach:   Alpine Skiing is a big mystery, and it will all come down to Petra, whether she'll compete and eventually shock everyone with a heroic result. That's the best-case scenario. Biathlon can be the dark horse, you never know how things turn around. The women's relay is probably our biggest chance, but all four of them need to deliver great performances. As for Ice Hockey, our national sport, I'll always believe in another fairytale. I'll always believe we'll pull off a miracle. Since I wasn't alive yet when we won gold at the World Championships, I can only resort to watching old videos and imagine how amazing it must have been to watch as your country is the champion of the world in something. Best on the planet. Even the silver years later was amazing, but I was too young to actually remember it, so it's time for another hockey euphoria in the country. Ski Mountaineering is a bit overlooked in the media right now, but I believe we have a huge chance of winning a medal in one of the events. Our athletes aren't minnows.   We're a small country, still relatively young. There's not much we're known for in the world, but sports are a perfect way to build a national identity, to stop people from thinking you're still part of a state that ceased to exist decades ago. Doing well in sports is one of the few things these lesser-known countries can show off, not just the ones in Europe.   I'm desperately hoping for a medal, and we all want those two weeks of the Olympics to be amazing and full of unforgettable moments.
