I get a feeling that this competition is not yet established enough and not taken too seriously by athletes and NOCs.

4 really strong Lithuanian guys that definitely had a chance to medal here are skipping it, focusing on the World Championships.

Kotryna Teterevkova though decided to take part and already won a bronze in the women's 50m breaststroke :)

a medal for Slovakia in swimming, yes, that say by itself about the level of the competition I guess :p

Anyway congrats to Tamara for the bronze :cheer:

Popovici won gold in 200m free in 1:43:64, best time of the year and his 4th time under 1:44. Clearly still the man to beat in 200 free at Worlds.

Potentially another 46 in 100m free from him incoming 2 days later.

Well, I find 23 a very weird age for Swimming, where many athletes reach their peak at a young age.

Well, for some smaller nations, it's actually very important to keep more athletes in swimming, because 20-23 is that age where you don't really find yourself on a team anymore and you don't have many options for funding your sports career.

The A qualifying times are really tough and you can't start with a B qualifying time if for example athletes like Rapšys, Šidlauskas and Meilutytė/Teterevkova are blocking 200/400m Freestyle and 100/200m Breaststroke for 7 years. It is a small stepping stone that might keep some athletes hungry, because not everyone is destined to peak at 21.

Luckily, we had enough hungry athletes that we now have 6-7 really capable male 200m Freestyle swimmers and they can start at worlds in the relay, even qualified to the Olympics, but we couldn't even field our normal relay due to qualification rules...

So yeah, I think this championship is necessary to ease the transition for those athletes that want a longer swimming career, that don't necessarily explode during their youth career, like Meilutytė or Popovici.
