"Smart" move, IOC. Really smart.

Why should you keep shooting at all?

Its sooo historic sport.

I am sure they will surprise us with some Gen Z pastime.

They’ll really do anything but add the women’s 25m rapid fire pistol to the Olympics.

This is just sailing deja vu. IOC will do anything to cut down the athletes quota on the less popular sports. Sailing & shooting have a long history but they're just not trendy enough these days to survive the purge in some capacity. Yeah, it sucks...

sailing and shooting have lost significant quotas the last two cycles, so yea. But I am not sure how swapping an event makes the quotas go down?

I think this has less to do with reducing quota and more about making the event program the same for men and women.

But they could also just replace the women’s 25m pistol with a 25m rapid pistol.

It's simple. In shooting it's possible to have the same athletes compete in multiple events (air rifle + 3 pos being the obvious one) but rapid fire pistol is for "one event speciallists" so by cutting down this event you actually remove more quotas by design. Promoting "multi event" athletes in multi event sports lowers the quota by default.

It's no different when gymnastics promoted OG qualifying through all-around which hosed single apparatus speciallists who could only make it as reigning world champions (and why Leszek Blanik didn't compete in Athens 2004 and only qualified for Beijing 2008 because he won WCh gold in 2007).

The IOC approved some major ISSF changes, which will go into effect as early as the next competitions

  • Approved proposals include increasing the number of athletes in shotgun and the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol event finals from six to eight
  • The 50m rifle 3 positions finals will feature just the standing position. Qualification still requires prone, kneeling and standing sections.
  • Changes have been made to the mixed team finals too, no longer creating gold and bronze-medal matches. Instead, all four teams who progress from qualification will compete together, following an elimination format instead.

    • I think China will nominate a sport they will be successful in, even if it's the third or fourth choice for a home Olympics
    • Isn't it boring that a man and a woman are tennis players? Besides, for me, Pogacar achieved more than Alcaraz... How was Alcaraz better than Sinner? And Sabalenka only won one Grand Slam...
    • SML's introverted personality is terrible for marketing but it's still a huge coup for Sabalenka & Belarus to take Laureus!
    • We'll see – Radev has complete power... If he's clever, he'll take over all the media, institutions, tribunals etc., and will does propaganda that poverty exists because the EU, LGBT and the Green Deal are bad  Orban ruled terribly, but for 16 years, he was elected in Hungary thanks to propaganda. It's not that only you have to rule well to have high support. It's just that from what people are writing, Radev isn't as clever as Orban... On the other hand, if he were stupid, he wouldn't have won yesterday with 45%. He can't be underestimated, at all.
    • But these are the times when being pro-EU is no longer cool, unfortunately. That ended around 2010. Now there are plenty of Orbans, Radevs, Trumps, Le Pens, AFDs, etc. Even the Magyar in Hun didn't say much about the EU, because the Hungarians didn't want to hear it. I'm afraid that some Radev-like emerge will soon in Slovakia, because Fico is probably too discredited and will take all power. It's important that it's more of a Magyar than Radev, but Russia will certainly does to get someone of its own there. Especially since, apart from maybe Poland and the Czech Republic, in the entire post-USSR bloc, most people still simply like Russia.
    • The exit poll showed 38% for Radev, and then it rise to 45%, as if people didn't want to admit they voted for him? Well, it had to happen eventually, because elections can't be held every 6 months forever. The question was, who would take advantage of this? They found a old communist who called himself a new party- Progressive Bulgaria :P But, since he was president in your country for 10 years, people shouldn't have fallen for it. Turnout is also very low... Unfortunately, in Bulgaria, it's either chaos, or some strange emerges, like the former king in 2001, then Boiko Borisov, now Radev, etc. What's more, it seems you still have a strong sentiment for communism and Russia, which is why Radev didn't even have to hide his good relations with Putin.
    • We can be embarrassed together.
    • God, I hope so. I just want a pro-European government, that's all. Man, we're tired.
    • Good start for us with 3 total medals so far.    Angel Rusev took his 6th straight European title.   With this he equals Yoto Yotov and passed a bunch of other Bulgarian legends who have 5.  Above him are Nikolay Peshalov with 8th and Naim Süleymanoğlu with 7th (there could be others with such records, but i don't have the full statistics).   A shame that Rusev's overall level isn't on par on a worldwide scale, but we all know that Europe has practically taken a backseat in weightlifting the past 20 years, with the exception of a few individuals.
