Desert Classic is going on in SLC, kind of the season opener there. Nothing too interesting, except for one thing: Arianna Fontana is competing (and doing well in what seems to be her first speed skating races)!

39.35 in the 500m

4:12 in the 3k

6.59,66 for Eder Moraes, the first ever Brazilian to break the 7-minute barrier on the 5k

47 years after Kay Arje Stenshjemmet - one of the legendary Norwegian Four S'es - was the first person overall to do so :d

I wonder what she's planning? Mass starts? I'm afraid that if she wants to combine short track with long track in 2026, she'll be left with nothing. The worst thing is that she would have the best chance in the mixed relay in short track, and by not training with the rest of the team, she significantly reduces her chances of participating in this relay.

1.57,85 for Fontana in the 1500, which as far as we could find is by far the fastest ever debut (of course it's not like she is new to skating, but still). Dan Li once debuted with 2.00,11 and Valerie Maltais once did that in the 3k with 4.15,91 so Fontana broke that 'record' as well yesterday :p

she always said that she'd like to do both (like Ter Mors in Pyeongchang), but I fear that if things go beyond her early expectation, she might well say a big "fuck you!" to the whole short track team

given what she already did in this past weekend, I think that she really has a chance to become a true medal contender in the 1000m and 1500m, meanwhile I don't think she would be that good in the 500m

and she might be the woman who make our team pursuit squad competitive at the highest level together with Lollobrigida and a third girl who's still to be found (if we can find one )

Mixed team relay has been added to the World Cup Series

IMO it's the worst mixed relay (and worst relay in general, heck, maybe worst team event) across all Olympic sports, which is quite an acomplishment. Just borderline unwatcheable.

Even here in :NED we are, to say it with a sense of understatement, not thrilled. That should tell enough :d

    • Despite total domination by the Norwegian men (and yes, it's exhausting and boring), the accomplishments this weekend of Emil Iversen and Einar Hedegart are worth highlighting, despite them being Norwegian.    Iversen was dropped by the Norwegian national team after the opener in Beitostølen 2 weeks ago and was not taken to Ruka. Instead, he won both the 10k and 20k Interval Classic starts in Gålå in the Norwegian Cup last week, which granted him a spot on the start line in Trondheim. He took full advantage of that opportunity and finished on the podium in the skiathlon, and finished just off the podium in today's 10k Interval Freestyle. This definitely puts his name in serious contention for a spot on the Olympic team, which looked incredibly doubtful just a few days ago.    Einar Hedegart, the 24-year-old biathlete who decided to challenge the stereotype that biathletes are inferior skiers to their cross-country counterparts, just won the 10k Interval Start against all of Norway's best in a de facto Olympic trial.    Yes, it's exhausting seeing nothing but Norwegian flags on the men's side, but there can be excitement just beneath the surface at times.
