I thought Warner was shoe in for a medal before the pole vault, and then disaster struck so…

I’d put C1 with Vincent and Jensen with the same medal odds as the C2 IMO.

You're awful sure about a lot of things that have turned out to be wrong ;) :d

I have too. The important thing is remembering that happens

By my count, 6/15 medals Canada has won so far have been unexpected (or at least far from sure things): fencing, rugby, trampoline, diving, tennis and Kharun's second bronze.

Meanwhile, three expected medals weren't won: Decathlon, CBP(Judo), Thibeault in boxing.

Some 50/50s did not win: MacNeil, Masse in her first race, at least one in gymnastics, Shady in Judo, Ahmed in the 10k, women's soccer (whole other story) and maybe the swimming relays.

But some 50/50s did produce: Sanford in boxing, Masse in the 200, Kharun in the 200.

Although, YET AGAIN, we've been cursed by many 4th place finishes, many of those were longshots to begin with. FAA in tennis, team fencing, MSH in swimming.

I mean, it's sport. You win some, you lose some. Our disappointments are happy surprises for others, and vice versa. Watching Harvey win bronze in fencing and the women win against the French and then Aussies in rugby have been absolute highlights for me this last week. Meanwhile, watching Warner foul out of pole vault when he just needed a few hundred points to podium was a low. At least we're competitive in the biggest two sports now and in the mix for gymnastics, too. Not like the dark days of 2000-2012 (and even before 92/96 if you were around) - Kyle Shewfelt notwithstanding.

This has been more about me talking this out more than anything. Let's go second week of Paris!

Great analysis, but CPB wasn’t an “expected” medal. She was one of the favourites, but even as the World #1 (based off her recent results, it’s hard to see why she was ranked as high as she was) it was always going to be tough.

Looks like Kharun will do the butterfly and Liendo the freestyle in the relay tomorrow

This makes a lot of sense to me - hopefully Knox and Tierney can bring it too.

    • I think the reason is that it's generally preferable to have a fast shooter in the 1st leg, and especially in the prone shooting, where Hofer is quite slow.   Now, I'm not saying I agree with the choice, because I don't. I think it's going to neutralize Giacomel's skiing skills in the 1st lap at least.   I guess the idea is to try and set a very fast pace in the 1st leg, which is usually quite tactical, but I'm afraid that's going to force Giacomel to risk too much because he will feel he has to make some time somehow.   Regardless, Italy must be on the podium tomorrow. I think that would be crucial for the following races as well. I think France is the clear favorite, but the other teams are not stronger than Italy on paper.
