The 'Big 6' European teams or 'Big 5' since Russia aren't competing, are still far ahead of you.

At the European Championships, you lost by 19 against the Netherlands and 16 against Hungary. At the World Championships, you lost by 12 against Italy. You also lost by 15 against Canada who you might be competing for a quota with.

Lose one of these games by 5 goals or less and then you can start talking about qualification. I don't mean to be rude but I've followed water polo for many, many years and trust me it is not as easy to qualify as you think, even with no Russia or African team accepting quota...

I believe you when you say it's gonna be hard and that there's a good chance that we won't qualify, but I wanna see how we develop over the next 3 years before I dismiss our chances as I genuinely believe with more funding, experience and improving players we can start seriously challenging for a quota.

:IRL

Sanita in the W1x, just broke yer heart

Hard to stomach so few road cyclists and no triathletes

I think breaking is… fine, actually.

Not a fan but I think the hate for it is excessive.

Interesting you chose snooker over other pub sports such as darts and pool. I'm not sure snooker has the NOC depth that pool and especially darts has, which could lead to a massive drop in quality.

Pool over Darts for NOC range, I think. More in Asia and the Americas, certainly.

Actually darts has a solid spread in both Americas and Asia.

Americas: USA, Canada, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guyana, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Mexico

Asia: Philippines, Japan, China, Thailand, Taiwan, Mongolia, Singapore, Brunei, Malaysia, India, Bahrain, South Korea, Hong Kong, Iran, Macau, UAE

Not sure pool has that much strength in depth.

It's slightly selective (it's late and I'm tired!), but pool has 18 NOCs represented in the top 30 of its Men's world rankings, while darts has 7.

Darts may be growing globally, but at the top end it's still dominated by GB plus a bit of Netherlands/Germany, while you could stage a pretty elite Olympic pool tournament right now with full continental representation, spread across a lot of NOCs.

Would like to see darts get there though - and I agree that both sports would be more suitable than snooker.

As a kiwi it’s hard to digest some of the things that were out of reach for us as a nation.

1.  3 Athletes/Team

  • Beach Ferns - Lost to China in very controversial qualifiers semis match hosted in China part Beach Volleyball QF
  • Black Sticks women missed out on Hockey QF due to poor loss to USA. They are much better team than that.
  • 3 athletes narrowly missing out on spot - Taylor Reid for triathlon as we could only have 2 male go through due to team qualification and he was off by 1 rank. One of the top 2 male BMX & Mountain Biking will miss out which appears Bearman and Gaze will qualify and Bias and Cooper missing out.
Finally no boxing QF for NZ. Many qualified athletes from Badminton, Gymnastics, Taekwondo, Archery and Table Tennis had qualified but NZOC has tough rules in regarding no tourist policy. They would only want to send athletes they see in potential top 8/16. Many ideal candidates who haven’t retired but took pro edition of their respective sports - David Nyaka in Boxing and Pete Burling & Blair Tuke 49er Sailing.

2. Sports/Events

  • Canoe Sprint - Bring back Women’s K1- 200m.
  • Track Cycling - Individual Pursuit - bring it back again.
  • Squash - again LA 28 is too far
  • Mountain Biking should feature 2 x events which should include XC Short Circuit
  • Swimming - 50m Backstroke should feature at Olympics

3. Timing/Schedule

  • Road Races should’ve been stretched away from Track Cycling which could’ve allowed
  • Athletics starting very late. Should’ve been held in different ground not same as Rugby 7s.
  •  Why are men’s Rugby and Football starting 3 days before the opening?

While pool does have a good representation between NOC's, darts has good representation between NOC in both it's codes (PDC and WDF). The PDC has good NOC representation in it's affiliate tour, with the PDC Asian Tour having half of Asia competing in it each year. The WDF is where you find the largest range of NOC representation, with almost all of Europe and half of Asia represented. And when it comes to something like this, that's the best ranking to use as the WDF is the governing body for darts and unless there's some agreement the PDC and the WDF only the players from that ranking would be allowed to play if the sport were to make it to the Olympics. I can see both sports making it in if they put registered interest as the IOC would see them as an asset to bring in younger and newer audiences, especially with darts.

    • As far as I am concerned, there are two very simple problems: infrastructure and the lack of cooperation between sports federations. Let me explain. The MiCo2026 Olympics will provide virtually no legacy in ice sports, there is still a lack of an indoor hall, there is no federal centre that has been promised for so many years. It could have been an opportunity to make a nice roof in Baselga di Pinè, but instead they preferred to make temporary facilities in Rho.   The second problem is the total lack of cooperation between roller skating and speed skating, we have a huge pool and we are not exploiting it. Fortunately we are doing a few small collegiate events, the technical collaboration with the Netherlands absolutely must be exploited.   I am not so negative however about the current situation, Ghiotto practically on the 10k seems to be off the scale (watch out for the Czech and Norwegian) and he can medal in the 5k and drag the pursuit team. In the mass start you have more cards in both the men's and women's, let's see what Fontana does. And a Fontana-Peveri-Lollobrigida pursuit team can also play for a third place
    • Canada Team Size Prediction for Winter Olympic Games 2026 Milano Cortina   Ski Sports   Alpine Skiing  (13) - That's been the team size the last couple of Olympics so it's a safe bet again. Cross Country Skiing  (10) - Not too familiar with the qualification system. Probably around 6 men and 4 women. Ski Jumping  (5) - Loutitt, Strate and Maurer for sure on the women's side. Possibly a 4th will qualify. On the men's side, if Bowd-Clowes returns, then he should also qualify. Nordic Combined  (0) - Been a nonexistent sport for a while. No athletes competing in the World Cup or Continental Cup. Freestyle Skiing  (32) - Should qualify a team in mixed aerials which means a maximum team size of 32 athletes. Which athletes in which disciplines to be determined. Snowboarding  (24) - Full teams in slopestyle and big air. Then somewhere between 1-4 athletes in the other disciplines. Biathlon  (6) - Based on the Nations Cup last year, the men finished outside the top 20 and wouldn't qualify a relay team (and that's without Russia and Belarus). With Christian Gow's retirement, that makes things even more difficult. Women's relay should still qualify though. Ski Mountaineering  (1) - Gonna be optimistic here and say that one athlete will qualify either through the World Rankings or continental quota.     Skating Sports   Speed Skating  (16) - 7 to 8 men, 8 to 9 women. For now, I'll say 8 of each gender. Short Track Speed Skating  (10) - Full team size. With the current skill level of the team, anything else would be a tragedy. Figure Skating  (12) - Most likely 1 man (I hope) and 1 woman, then 2-3 pairs and 2-3 ice dance couples. For now, let's say 2 in pairs and 3 in ice dance.     Sleigh Sports   Luge  (7) - 2 women + 1 entry in each of the other disciplines Skeleton  (4) - 1 or 2 men + 2 or 3 women Bobsleigh  (14) - 2 men's crews (in both events) and 3 women's crews (in both events)     Team Sports   Curling  (12) - Full team or else you might as well burn the federation to the ground. Ice Hockey  (48) - Both men's and women's teams already qualified       Total Optimistic Prediction  -  (229) Total Pessimistic Prediction  - (184)   Total Realistic Prediction  -  (214)
    • Besides, I think Eitrem will be better than Ghiotto. You can see it after 1500 meters. He is younger. The whole Norwegian team is also in great shape. You just have to look at the team Norway has, how many new and young skaters there are and in our group A there is one Trentini, who takes last place. In every winter sport we invest too little money to be counted.   If Eitrem has the same form over long distances as he does over 1500 metres, he will dominate this season, not Ghiotto or Roest.
    • Looking at last season's 1st World Cup, it's worse for now and it should be the other way around. Bosa out of shape, Trentini weak. Both will drop to a lower group. It's similar to skeleton, i.e. regression instead of progress. I hope this doesn't mean Ghiotto is also in weaker form, because it could end up with 0 podiums this weekend.
    • In general, our picture for a little over 1 year until the home games looks like this:     - the women's sector is still based on one Lollo, who is 3 years older than 2022, - the women's and men's sprint sector is based on one Bosa and possibly the young Pergher (0% possobility for medal in 2026), - Ghiotto has made a lot of progress and that is a big plus. He could result to give our even 3 medals, including 1/2 gold. Our team's performance also depends to a large extent on Ghiotto's form, - the rest of the men's team is basically unchanged. There is Giovannoni in the mass start, there is Malfatti in the longer distances, but they are not competitors on the podium of a major event.   I will repeat myself: if Ghiotto continues to make such progress, we will probably win 3 medals, 2 of which gold and it will be a success. If something doesn`t work out, an injury, illness, etc. (we know from Vitozzi that this can happen to anyone), then it could be very bad. By the way, this also applies to other sports: the above-mentioned Vitozzi in biathlon, Goggia in downhill, Brignone in giant slalom, etc.
    • With the World Cup season in most of the winter sports about to begin and qualification in some sports already underway, I think it's about time for this thread.    Template    ...
