Yes it is. And France put in Mayer instead. He isn’t even qualified.

In fairness, at least Mayer was just added to the field. Nobody has really lost out there.

The heptathlon issue is far worse, because of the knock on effect on Sweden and Austria. Not to mention the French athletes who've missed out because their own federation is incompetent.

Just a mess all round.

Meyer shouldn’t be there. Everybody has to qualify so don’t see a reason why he should be exempted.

beside that he could try achieving the norm somewhere else, eg in Ratingen

But it’s worse. They added a non-qualified guy instead for two qualified girls in the heptathlon. So now there’s 25 men and only 22 women. Why not put the two French women in heptathlon instead? Sorry here in Sweden we are mad on Mayer participation too. As much for the Swedish and Austrian ladies.

Again, I've no problem with adding Mayer on his own. Yes, he probably shouldn't be there. Yes, it is sentimental and they are trying to do a favour to him/the Olympics.

If he were taking the spot of someone else, I'd think it was terribly unjustified. But nobody really loses for him being there.

But the fact of the matter is that they aren't going to put the heptathletes in - whether the French, Swedish or Austrian - if Mayer isn't there. There would just be 24 men and 22 women. Everyone is losing there and that's not going to change whether Mayer is there or not.

The broke the rules for Mayer but are very hard with the rules for the heptathlon and you don’t see any problem with this? Seriously?

I imagine it is something to do with the heptathlon entries debacle.

For those not in the loop: what about the heptathlon entries debacle?

Edit: something with Sweden and Austria, I guess.

If Mayer manages to qualify, someone else will not. It he wins a medal, someone else will not. He may push someone down a place in the standings, who could have used the extra points that the higher position would be bring to strengthen his world ranking. So not a victimless crime.

Also, why limit it to Rome and why not add him to the Olympic lineup as well.

Yes, because France were too late withdrawing two qualified athletes, EAA will not nominate the next to two athletes in the ranking, from Sweden and Austria, to take their place. So only 22 participants.

Well, that is shitty from EAA indeed.

Just as stupid as in biathlon, where athletes who decide not to start in the pursuit (top-60 of the sprint) are never replaced by whoever finished 61st, 62nd etc.

I have no problem with the Mayer decision. I have a big problem with the other decision. I'm just viewing them as separate issues.

If the result of Mayer not going would be that the hept field would be the full 24, I would support that. But we both know that won't be the case.

    • is having its general election today.   In a big turnaround, the Liberals lead by Mark Carney are now ahead in the polls, after having been over 20 points behind as recently as December. This is mostly credited to the resignation of Justin Trudeau and America's on and off trade war, along with comments Donald Trump made about Canada becoming the 51st state.   While the Liberals are favoured to win a fourth consecutive election, there is a lot of uncertainty around whether it will be a majority or a minority government. There is also an outside chance of the Conservatives, lead by Piere Poilievre, will form a minority government.
    • Ukraine has made progress recently and lost yesterday on penalties to the UK, but that still doesn't explain why the Italian team isn't making any progress. We are sitting in a lower division for 3 years and that's with a ban for Rus and Blr. New and great coaches are being brought in and it's not giving any results. 8-10 years ago we were regularly playing in the highest division, every 2 years and that was with a much stronger teams (Russia and Belarus were there). I don't know where the problem is.

    • Many things, probably they thought it is already over and the win will come itself... but also Nitra improved their play a lot, they outplayed us in physicality in the last 2 games, they won almost every duel. Was hard to watch. Anyway I am still persuated we will finish the job at home with success on Tuesday
    • If you look at their results this season and on the Super Series, it’s not really that surprising.    I’d consider them to be medal contenders.
    • At one point it seemed we were making good progress in this sport, but in the past 1-2 years things seem to have hit a standstill..   Ivaylo Ivanov is still our only elite judoka, but he is passing 30. There were/are some promising youngsters, but they haven't been able to make a jump to the senior level. At this Euro we barely had any first round wins (not including Ivanov). In fencing and taekwondo the results are much more visible for us.
    • yes, but that's only an (important) episode... I mean, what's up with your team more in general...it looks like they got the classic "fear to win", they're not as brilliant as they were in the early games of the series
