Has Gary Hunt made the switch to high diving from cliff diving? Or is it only for the Olympics.

Technically he started as a platform diver way back in the day (he got bronze at the 2006 Commonwealths in the 10m synchro). But he's been competing at the 10m synchro (as well as still doing the cliff diving) for France since making the nationality change a couple of years back.

They've not had a 10m synchro team at either the Worlds or Olympics in the last 15 years anyway, so he's probably not taking anyone else's spot.

Oh I know he’s done platform diving in the past, just thought he was focusing on cliff diving at the moment :d

It's not better gives this place for normal divers and decline?

It's the best team France can put together, so from their point of view why not take the free quotas?

Either way, I know they won't be competitive at all but it's still cool to see Gary Hunt make his Olympic debut given how great of a high diving career he's had.

For me in strict events with max 8 quotas the TOP 8 world teams should go even without continental representantion.

If you have like more than 8 host,  and continental quotas could be introduced.

Somebody have "fun" for debute, somebody has "sad" for being 8th in the World and not making OG because some limits.

That's a World Aquatic consideration, not a consideration for the French NOC.

Maybe there shouldn't be host nation spots in synchro, but those are the only host spots available in diving so.

Perhaps we have a confusion of terms here? Platform diving is 10m indoors. High Diving is 27m outdoors. Cliff diving is just whatever is available. Three different things.

Hunt is primarily a high diver. He also cliff dives, and historically - and now - he platform dives.

Platform was the correct term.
