2004 is hardly a good comparison. Best American team arrives in Paris. Much better comparison would be 2008 and there's really nobody as strong as Spain's team from that year. If something like a lock exists, both US teams in basketball are locks. 

Legitimate argument that USA won't have best 3 players in the tournament Jokic, SGA and Luka probably better then anyone USA will field. USA are favourites however they won't have best player ok the court ok big matches.

Wade, James and Anthony were rookies in 2003/2004 season.  That team had only one all nba player in prior season: Duncan. Nowhere near the top team they could send. If Shaq and Kobe were there for example they would've easily won.

Maybe they won't have the best player in a hypothetical match vs Serbia IF Jokić plays and that's a big if, but they'll have 12 next best players.

A lot of athletes/teams mentioned are favourites, but hardly locks.
