Mixed bag so far on Day 1.

 

Jacqueline Simoneau qualified for the solo technical final, placing 3rd in prelims. 
 

On the other hand, Mia Vallee doesn’t look to be in good form, placing 15th to miss the women’s 1m springboard final.

Jacqueline Simoneau wins gold in women’s solo free, for her second medal of the week after silver in the solo technical!   If only this was an Olympic event…

Same spot Vallee got last year in the 1m, with much better competition. She was ok at the PanAms, but I'm not super confident for Paris.

If this was Tokyo she would have qualified, but alas more non-sensical quota cuts

To be fair, AQUA did make a tradeoff of allowing 800m/1500m athletes with an OQT to be able to swim the open water events so we should still have 25 athletes (if not more) in each event. In previous games, there were some pool swimmers in the open water competition so ultimately there aren't really any changes in quotas. Emma is under 7 seconds back of the 1500m OQT and she just set the Canadian short course record in the event back in April so I'm optimistic that she'll be at the Olympic still.

      Ceccarelli wanted to take money from the federation and train daughter in her team. The federation didn`t want to agree to this, because we are talking about a 16-year-old girl at the time. Private teams have stars with recognized achievements, e.g. Brignone or Goggia. In my opinion, Ceccarelli could have collected money from private funds, after all, with such successes of her daughter it would not be a problem. Tina Maze also separated from Slovenia at some point and created her own team. In a situation in which Colturi would start to achieve successes, then the federation should start to finance her team more + private sponsors. For me it is simple.

      I think that It's a similar situation with Braahten in Norway but there are some differences:     - he's an adult, - his mother is Brazilian, - Norway has a lot of talent in technical events (although of course it's always better to have 1 more than 1 less).

      Well, we lived through Caroline Wozniacki representing Denmark and there was some talk if she could switch to Poland early on but she said no since she lived her entire life in Denmark anyway. But she was very popular here. On the other side Angelique Kerber who also has Polish ancestry actually lived in Poland on her grandfather's estate (which was a tennis academy). In the last few years except Eugenia Bujak (cycling) switching to Slovenia due to a conflict with the federation we don't really have such cases. I can understand many Italians have their opinion on Colturi & her mother alas it's boosted by the lack of other top end prospects in your skiing now (and some other winter sports). I'm surprised Italian journalists haven't figured out what's behind Colturi's switch already because it has to be money or "personal differences" either way.

      You know, but we still don't know what that was about. Ceccarelli has a difficult character but still changing colors to a country with which you have absolute no connetions? What would you say if Iga Swiatek fell out with the Polish tennis federation and started playing for Luxembourg or Andorra? Certainly not everyone would decide to take such a step, even if they had to give in a little in talks with the federation.    Another thing is that the Italian training system simply doesn`t work. As you can see, there are talents but we don`t know how to train them. Since the golden generation born in 1990-1995 (Brignone, Bassino, Goggia) we haven`t trained anyone who would stand on the podium in giant slalom or slalom in World Cup. So something is wrong. At the beginning of the 21st century we had a large group of good athletes in giant slalom (maybe not at Brignone's level): Karbon, Moelgg, Putzer, Gius, etc., who were able to win World Cups, win World Championship medals, etc. Now we have no one. In women's giant slalom for example: if Brignone and Bassino are gone, even getting to the first 20 in World Cup will be a problem for us.
