Road Cycling UEC European Championships 2023

Recommended Posts

despite a crash in the boys' stint, thanks to an amazing comeback by the girls, :ITA Italy won the Junior Mixed Team Time Trial ahead of :GER Germany and :FRA France

the :NED Netherlands, who were leading after the men's section, had a very poor female stint and finished only in 4th place

Elite Mixed Team Time Trial

Gold: :FRA France

Silver: :ITA Italy

Bronze: :GER Germany

great comeback win by the French women

Italy had a 20-sec lead after the men's section, but the women couldn't resist the French rally and finally lost by about 4 seconds

Women's U23 Road Race

Gold: :NED Ilse Pluimers

Silver: :GBR Anna Shackley

Bronze: :SUI Linda Zanetti

Very good result for GBR and their hopes of securing a top 5 spot in the world rankings as she'll pick up additional 85 points.

So far this week, :GBR are net +140 points and we still have the road race to go.

:GBR 4th with Pfieffer Georgi and 8th for Anna Henderson will add a further 195 points to the GB total so they will finish the week +330 points. That should be enough to extend their lead over Australia to just shy of 500 points. It's difficult to see Australia being able to close that gap in the remaining 3 weeks of racing.

Worst possible results for :GBR hopes of top 5 finish with Christophe Laporte taking the win in the men's road race - :FRA pick up additional 250 ranking points. The only upside is that Valentin Madouas has had a poor Tour of Luxembourg so will drop around 175 points to give France a net gain of around 75 points.

I’ll say it again, I don’t see any way GB doesn’t finish in the top 5. It’s between France and Spain for the final spot but both won’t get ahead of GB

    • Despite total domination by the Norwegian men (and yes, it's exhausting and boring), the accomplishments this weekend of Emil Iversen and Einar Hedegart are worth highlighting, despite them being Norwegian.    Iversen was dropped by the Norwegian national team after the opener in Beitostølen 2 weeks ago and was not taken to Ruka. Instead, he won both the 10k and 20k Interval Classic starts in Gålå in the Norwegian Cup last week, which granted him a spot on the start line in Trondheim. He took full advantage of that opportunity and finished on the podium in the skiathlon, and finished just off the podium in today's 10k Interval Freestyle. This definitely puts his name in serious contention for a spot on the Olympic team, which looked incredibly doubtful just a few days ago.    Einar Hedegart, the 24-year-old biathlete who decided to challenge the stereotype that biathletes are inferior skiers to their cross-country counterparts, just won the 10k Interval Start against all of Norway's best in a de facto Olympic trial.    Yes, it's exhausting seeing nothing but Norwegian flags on the men's side, but there can be excitement just beneath the surface at times.
