Wait a minute... Tennis ITF Australian Open?

ITF? Is that even a thing?

All Grand Slam events are organized by ITF - not by ATP or WTA :bye:

Same goes for Davis Cup & Fed Cup.

Yes, we need to have that in the thread or else we might think this is the Tennis FEI Australian Open and we expect people to jump over the nets on horses with a tennis racket in their hands. Ah, the strictly forced rules of Totallympics thread names, gotta love it.

Refresh my mind please, what was Sharapova always accused of? :p

Expand

Sharapova was always accused of not being a real Russian and basically an American.

Anastasia Myskina and Elena Dementieva were in particular against her and Myskina flat out refused to play in the Russian Fed Cup team if Sharapova was selected as well. As it turned out Sharapova didn't make her Russian Fed Cup debut until 2008, basically the year after Myskina was forced to retire due to a persistent ankle injury.

Evgeniy Kafelnikov also went on a Sharapova rampage but he blasted everyone.

JImenez Kasintseva was the youngest player in the draw. She will turn 15yo in August though she is older than Cori Gauff when the American won the French Open juniors in 2018. Still it's basically two years older than Martina Hingis who won 1993 French Open aged 12 and 8 months ;)

    • Yeah, we have such a strong crop of Juniors, that we can’t take them all. They all have exciting trajectories but to predict what Junior swimmers will is always difficult. Better to let them all swim together at Juniors than rocketing them all up to seniors and swimming a prelim and going home.
    • Hanlon is the most unlucky, in my opinion. Aside from relay cover, she's the 50m champ and they made a point of including consideration for those events being in LA for the other discretionary picks. Essentially she has the same case for selection as Max Morgan (albeit without the trajectory right now).   Blocksidge's form was way off this week (compared to her previous bests). Obviously being still young you could put that down to relative inexperience. Still, she has World and European Juniors that she could still be selected for this summer. There's an argument that performing well at those might be as beneficial as going to Singapore.   That said, I'm happy that they did take a bunch of discretionary picks. That's not always been the case.
