2020 Grand Slam (Düsseldorf, GER)

Day #3 Recap

The last day of a Judo world tour event is usually dedicated to the big men and women...

this tournament made no exception...

:JPN Japan's domination continued also today, but only among the women, where Shori Hamada (-78kg) and Sara Asahina (+78kg) were just unbeatable...

among the men, instead, all 3 titles from today's action went to Countries of the former Soviet Union, in particular :UZB Uzbekistan surprised most of the audience by winning 2 Gold Medals (Davlat Bobonov, -90kg and Mukhammadkarim Khurramov, -100kg), while :GEO Georgia took the super-heavyweights (+100kg) title home, thanks to Guram Tushishvili...

so, at the end of the tournament, :JPN Japan destroyed the field taking 8 Gold Medals, followed at a remarkable distance by :GEO Georgia and :UZB Uzbekistan with 2 Gold Medals each and further behind by :CAN Canada and :FRA France with "only" 1 Gold Medal each...

Savelkoul's injury after 4:30 in this video. In case you don't want to see a leg bending the wrong way (so against the knee's natural direction), don't watch..

Savelkouls is walking, but with a big amount of effort: she can make a step with her left leg and then sort of drag her right leg there. Doctors have said there is about a 1% chance she can at some point in her life walk normal again... :(

Savelkouls herself said she thinks the chance is a bit bigger and she even hasn't given up all hopes for her career yet.

yes it will.it is written in the outlines of the event.
vizier says:
This is a return to the IJF World Judo Tour like no other. Budapest is ready to again host a spectacular Olympic qualification event, but this will be a very special event indeed. Following more than half a year of quiet restriction, we will meet again and it will be, undoubtedly, electric!

most likely also Italy will be forced to pull out of this event, if covid emergency doesn't slow down in the next few days in our Country (which is the most improbable thing in the world, I fear)...:nopompom:

Italy didn't withdraw "yet". But Poland will represented by just 8 judokas, instead previously registered 24

Netherlands will represent only 13 judoka's, Kim Polling (-70 kg) withdrew, because she's afraid of Covid-19.

it's only a question of time, as we're going towards a new lockdown (even if the government doesn't want to take the responsibility to name it for what it is and prefers to let the single regional authorities to close down the Country)...
