Absolutely, investigate everything that's not done on skates, immediately! :old:

I'm convinced every summer olympics' top 10 medaling nation (+Norway for WOG) has similar secret programs.

I can tell you for sure Italy hasn't...anymore...

we had such kind of program until halfway through the Nineties, when Gianni Petrucci took over as our NOC President (January 1999, but he was operating since mid 1998, after the end of the Olympic cycle with Nagano 1998 as the finish line)...

since then, we lost basically more than 80% of our funding system (thank you, mr. Tremonti and mr. Berlusconi for that) and moreover Petrucci is very close to the Vatican City and the old Democratic Christian party, which led him to a different philosophy than his predecessor...

in fact, after the high of Lillehammer 1994 (WOG) and Atlanta 1996 (SOG), we started our decline, losing medals Games after Games (especially in those 2/3 traditional disciplines where doping counts more than talent, Cycling -we almost disappeared from the Track scene until the raise of Elia Viviani in the last 8/10 years...and we're not even close to the powerhouse we once were- Flatwater Canoeing and Athletics)...

and right now, we're definitely too poor to even think about such kind of program...tbh, in the next 5 or 10 years I expect Italy to almost disappear from the sports map, except maybe for 2 or 3 sports that still have a lot of boys and girls practicing and a national federation that somehow works well (Fencing, Swimming, Judo...maybe Shooting, but in this case we don't have a good number of youngsters, just a good "school" in shotgun shooting)...

Yeah, exact same nations would be top 10 with or wirhout any secret programs. Medals and economy go hand in hand.

GBR at Atlanta 1996 = 1 Gold Medal...

so, I'm not so sure they can get the same glorious results they started to record since Beijing 2008 without massive "help"...

other Nations...well, some of them are somehow truly "regular" in their performance...so, I guess those Countries will always shine in any case, but some others...

Yeah, Steve Redgrave & his streak.

However that 1996 spanking made GB transfer the lottery funding into sports thereafter. It's funny they didn't do it before. Probably Thatcher's strict fiscal policy had something to do with it but someone more familiar with the topic could elaborate. Poland used national lottery money to fund sports even during the communist era.

That’s the most beautiful thing about Athletics, it often breaks that rule. Though now we’re just seeing the richer nations buy better athletes from poorer ones, so...

we used to do it until the mid Nineties...

then mr. Berlusconi became the Prime Minister and mr. Tremonti his Financial Minister...and they started to open up the betting system in Italy and invented our current main lottery, named Superenalotto, which give away a lot of money and basically killed the good old Totocalcio, which was the only true National betting game before that and used to give our NOC a lot of funding (it was about 35% going to the weekely prize money, 20% to the NOC and the rest to the government as a tax)...

the new games instead are about 60% to the prize money and the rest to the government, with no more funding for any other activity...

so, our golden age of sports was soon over...

now it's up to a pre-determined anmount of money given directly by the government to the NOC and the many small local sponsorships that every federation can find...

I’m pretty conflicted about this whole scandal. I’m going to continue educating myself before really coming to an opinion.

Here’s my biggest take away from the reporting I’ve seen: UK Sport asked WADA to clarify if what they wanted to do was legal, WADA said it was legal. Now, they may have not been fully honest to WADA, but WADA said the substance in question was legal under it’s laws, so...

There are clearly multiple ethics issues here, as well as a debate around the substance in question. Plus it continues the argument about technology/science in sports, and the disparity between rich and poor countries.

Let’s not pretend that every country isn’t developing dietary, medical, and technological advantages for their athletes though.

I am definitely disgusted by the way UK Sport handled this, and that WADA never really seemed to investigate the issue further after London 2012. This makes me question WADA even further, as yet another scandal has undermined their ability to keep sport clean. I am definitely worried about the health of athletes who tried this substance. This only adds to the compounding issue of athlete abuse around the world. Plus, it sets a dangerous precedent for countries to continue to research into questionable methods of helping their athletes gain an edge.

That doesn't mean it's fair for the other competitors.

For me, it's no so much as the amount of medals, but the deliberate attempts to cheat and find "legal" means to do so (Norway with their asthma medication is another example), depriving the world of a honest competition.

I know cheating has always existed and will continue to do so; but isn't WADA's legal battle against Russia precisely the State's cover up of cheating?

    • Not counting Colturi, the last time an Italian stood on the podium of the World Cup in a special slalom was in 2011:     -Manuela Moelgg: 4.01.201...     -The last Italian victory was Chiara Costazza: 29.12.2007...     Terrifying numbers...     In my opinion, the best slalom skier on the Italian team is still Federica Brignone, who doesn`t trains in this discipline anymore. If she did, she would easily beat skiers like Peterlini, Rosetti or Della Mea. I don't understand why we have such problems in this competition? Bad training methods, bad coaches? I fear that Colturi would also be reduced to mediocrity by this hopeless Italian staff.
    • Was an announcement which competitions will be on 2026 Olympics games? On Olympics Games site there is an information that for the first time men and women will competite on the same distances.       10 + 10 km skiathlon (men and women) - clear     Sprint (men and women) - but what style?     Freestyle team sprint (men and women) - clear     Relay 4x7.5 km (men and women) - clear     10 km freestyle (men and women) - clear     50 km classical technique (men and women) - clear
    • I'll give you the curling comments based on your expertise. But, I will say that GB have only ever not qualified a curling team once, the mixed pair in 2018. They just have a way of upping their game when the olympics come around.    I hope I'm wrong but I have a funny feeling that Huw Nightingale won't qualify and as such neither will the Mixed Team. It feels a bit like the Mixed Team Skeet in Paris, where Ben Llewellin missed out on qualifying for the individual so the team couldn't compete, despite being World Champions 2 years prior.    Again, you definately know more about ice hockey than me but I feel like, apart from vs Norway, the Team wasn't outplayed in the final qualifier. Albeit intermittently, the team has been in the top division of the world championships for a few years now, so they do have the quality to compete for an Olympic Berth
    • Think you're you're being a little pessimistic here. In men's slalom the #3 GB skier is in the world top 40 and the 3 Carrick-Smith teenagers are jumping up the rankings too. I'd actually be slightly disappointed if we didn't have a full team of 4 slalom skiers plus 2 in the women's event. The speed events are going to be a big challenge though   EDIT - Sorry, #3 GB slalom skier is actually ranked #41 in the world

    • The big problem with Nines is that every attempt at a world competition has failed badly. A World Cup in 2019 was not repeated again and a World Club tournament was abandoned 20 years years ago due to a lack of interest. I'm not even sure the variant is played anywhere these days.
    • I believe, the IOC has admitted the cap will have to be relaxed for 2028.   I think they will go with what you proposed. 10,500 for core sports plus some for extra sports
    • Slovakia   Team Size Prediction for Winter Olympic Games 2026 Milano Cortina   Ski Sports   Alpine Skiing  (5) - As usual, 3 W & 2 M. Petra Vlhová will be accompanied by 2 other girls, I guess Rebeka Jančová should be one of them, no idea who will be the other one. For the men team, it is going to be again the Žampa bros clan with one last dance for Adam and once again joind by his younger brother Andreas. Cross Country Skiing  (4) - As always in the last couple of games, I expect a Coubertine-like participation in this sport with a perfect Bach-esque gender equality with 2 M and 2 W in order to start in both Team sprints semifinals. Do not ask me the names, I have absolutely no idea Ski Jumping  (2) - There a quite solid chance to finally return in this beautiful sport for Slovakia since the extinction of the dinosaurs. The young Kapustík siblings, Hektor and his sister Kira are the biggest chances for this history making, Among women it would be an absolute premiere, plus there a minor chance that Kira Kapustíková may be, if all planets align perfectly accompanied by another girl Tamara Mesíková. Nordic Combined  (0) - Maybe in Abu Dhabi 2042 or New Trumpopolis 2046 Freestyle Skiing  (1) - Michael Oravec in Freeski Big Air & Slopestyle is the only realistic chance, there some young girls trying ski cross, but still too long way to go here Snowboarding  (2) - Klaudia Medlová once returned from injuries should qualify for her last games in Big Air + Slopestyle. Among men in the same disciplines we may have an olympic debut with Samuel Jaroš. Biathlon  (6) - Hopefully with the returns of Paja Fialková (now Batovská) and Nastya Kuzmina we will win enough points to qualify a full female squad alongside the young Ema Kapustová and one of the Remeňová sisters to form a relay. Among men, the situation is more complicated, I hope at least 2 guys will make it (The biggest chances I see for the young talent Borguľa and maybe Sklenárik to join him) to have at least a mixed relay, a full men relay hope is utopic Ski Mountaineering  (2) - Funny enough, probably our biggest medal chance is this niche sport with Marianna Jagerčíková in W Sprint, alongside her male partner Jakub Šiarnik we should start also in the Mixed relay     Skating Sports   Speed Skating  (1) - There a fresh young czech import who can qualify us for the very first time in this sport, his name is Lukáš Steklý, but since I have zero clue about this sport I can not say how much it is also realistic though Short Track Speed Skating  (0) - Would be nice to have again a participation in this, we have a couple of talented young girls, but still far from the required level, so probably none again Figure Skating  (1) - The young Adam Hagara is our solid chance for participating, he will need a good dose of luck in the process though, and as knowing the good old mathematical laws about the equation between Slovakia and Luck it will end by Zero athletes     Sleigh Sports   Luge  (5) - 2 guys in Singles with the immortal Highlander Ninis, a pair in Doubles and at least one female should qualify, at least I hope so Skeleton  (0) - There one kid trying the stuff, but no chance unless he swithc nationality to Benin or Tuvalu for the free pass Bobsleigh  (1) - Viki Čerňanská I do believe shoud repeat her Olympic experience from Beijing in the monobobs once again     Team Sports   Curling  (0) - lol Ice Hockey  (25) - Embarassement and national mourning avoided, The National pride qualified again and continue the streak of never missing any winter olympic tournament since the independence. With very likely the most talented generation our hockey ever had, Cortina is a great journey we are looking forward.
