source? Qualification document updated on 22 November still says that they must participate in the WCH.

Tokyo 2020 Qualification System (the .pdf file) in this page:

https://www.ifsc-climbing.org/index.php/olympic-games

directly from it: Section C, Athlete Eligibility: "(an athlete must) have participated at least in one (1) of the events mentioned in section D, “Qualification Pathway” of this document."

and in Section D are listed 3 different categories: the World Champs, the OQT in Toulouse and the various Continental Champs in 2020...

I wonder what happened to Korea, they were supposed to be better than this. Chon Jongwon won the Asian Games over two Japanese climbers and Kim Jain is a big name in this sport. (apparently she past her prime days)

it was also a very disappointing day for Elnaz Rekabi. she underperformed big time in all 3 disciplines and now with only 3 Asian climbers qualified already (2 JPN and 1 CHN) there is almost no chance in the Asian Championships. :( it will be between Korea and China.

btw with this format, if you finish 1st in speed you are 99% guaranteed a place in the final. maybe if Alipour was committed to this combined event, there was a chance for him. but that won't work in continental qualifiers, because there is only 1 quota up for grab and speed specialists can't win the competition.

on page 3:

"One (1) male and one (1) female Tripartite Commission Invitation Place are made available to eligible NOCs at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. The selected athletes shall meet the required technical level and the eligibility criteria defined under section C of this document. In addition to that, the athletes must participate in the IFSC Combined World Championships."

But how did :NIG Niger get a rower in 2012 then? I remember it came out of nowhere. Their selected athlete virtually had no international experience whatsoever.

Some sports are quite lax about minimum requirements. Judo is another sport where athletes not even listed in the rankings can be selected to compete.

At least in Judo, the skill level between master and intermediate isn’t that pronounced as compared to other sports.

OK, I missed that...but to me, it's contradictory according to what they wrote above...first, they say "1 of those events" (among which, the world champs) then they say "must have been at the world champs", which is quite differnt from the other criteria...

meh...

It's not contradictory. Section C is about criteria for the eligibility of all athletes. The other section is about tripartite places: in addition to section C, those athletes must participate in the WCh.
