quite a nice Spengler Cup, this year

luckily, there have been quite a lot of close games and very few blowouts (namely, Ambrì thrashed by Frolunda in the first playoff match  )

game of the tournament, Davos vs Frolunda (the semifinal match), but really honorable mention for HC Dynamo Pardubice and their amazing comeback from 1-3 to 4-3 in the last 3+ mins of the semifinal vs :CAN

IIHF to provide further clarification regarding the participation of the Israeli National Team in IIHF Championships

The IIHF would like to provide further clarification on its recent decision regarding the participation of the Israeli National Teams in IIHF Championships.

The IIHF Council decided to restrict the Israeli National Team from participating in IIHF Championships on a temporary basis due to safety and security concerns it had for all Championship participants, specifically including the players and team staff from all participating teams. This decision currently affects the Israeli National Team’s participation in the 2024 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 World Championship Division III Group B scheduled to start on 22 January 2024. This event has been originally planned to be held in Israel, but due to already existing safety and security concerns being moved to Bulgaria.

The decision is not a sanction against the Israeli Federation and does not affect the Israeli Federation’s status as a full member in good standing with the IIHF.

IIHF Council will meet in February to assess the safety situation associated with the March and April Championships in which Israel is scheduled to participate and will meet in March to assess the safety situation associated with the April Championship in which Israel is scheduled to participate. This will allow the IIHF Council the ability to deal with each Championship on a case-by-case-basis taking into consideration the facts unique to each location where a respective Championship is scheduled to take place.

The IIHF Council spoke several times with all stakeholders prior to taking this decision and will continue to speak with all stakeholders with the hope that the decision will only impact the Championship scheduled to take place in January. The IIHF stands behind the Israeli Federation and wants to secure the safety of all players participating in its championship including players from Israel.

The IIHF Council’s current decision is based strictly on specific facts, including:

  • The teams participating.
  • The number of players who will be participating as minors.
  • The number of people involved in the overall organization of the Championship.
  • The location of the Championship arena being located in a student area with a high population from the affected regions.
  • Expected attendance for home games, where the Championship is expected to draw between 1,000 and 1,500 fans.
  • The size and nature of the multi-purpose arena facility which includes additional ice sheets where other events will be occurring and a large public gym, shops, and restaurants. These public areas are not subject to closure during the Championship.

The IIHF completely understands that this is a difficult decision and is being made to prioritize security and safety of all involved parties first.

The IIHF hopes to find a way as soon as possible to bring back the Israeli National team in our championship program.

Israeli National Team allowed to compete in upcoming 2024 IIHF WM20IIIA in Bulgaria

Following recent exchanges and extensive discussions with all involved stakeholders, the IIHF has received from the Ministry of Youth and Sport in Bulgaria and the related Organizing Committee the required confirmation for the safety and security support needed to allow the Israeli National Team to take part in the 2024 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 World Championship Division III, Group A (WM20IIIA), which will take place in Sofia in the period of 22-29 January 2024.

Namely, the IIHF has received confirmation and details from the relevant authorities regarding all security measures that will be implemented to address the identified risks associated with allowing the Israeli national team to participate in this Championship.

We are grateful to the Bulgarian authorities, the Ministry of Youth and Sport, Ministry of Interior, the local police and all our stakeholders for their support and assistance in this matter.

We wish the Israeli National Team and all other participating teams all the best for the competition.

For the IIHF the safety and security of all players, teams, people involved in the organization of the Championships and fans in the venues will always stay in first place for any decisions being made.

A one-week tournament with the participation of the Israeli National Team without any guarantee about safety and security of all people involved is irresponsible. Therefore, the IIHF will keep monitoring the situation and reviewing its upcoming Championships on a case-by-case basis. In close collaboration with our stakeholders and local authorities, we will strive to find the necessary conditions and support to allow the Israeli teams to participate. Further decisions will be taken and notified in February 2024.

Smells like IIHF was one of the first ones to dip their toes in the water to test it and see what the reactions would be, and the water is still a bit too cold for them :p

    • Netanyahu is bad but unfortunately Hamas helps him maintain power. Every attack they make is a reinforcement of Netanyahu's rhetoric about the country's security, etc. In the fall of 2023, Netanyahu was already losing support and then suddenly a big Hamas attack on a festival near the Gaza Strip. Coincidence? It wouldn`t surprise me at all if Netanyahu knew about the plan for this attack but did nothing so that he would then have the tools to maintain his power. I also remember Ariel Sharon - he was probably even more radical than Netanyahu but he had a brain hemorrhage and fell into a coma.

A large part of the power apparatus of the USSR was based on Jews, especially in the years shortly after WWII.   Instead of constantly writing about Jews, would be better to tell me which country Algeria has better diplomatic relations with: Tunisia or Egypt?
