The photo finish is there to determine the winner in case of a tight finish. It is not there for this reason.

It was right to DQ them because FYI there were other athletes who participated in the race and they also had teammates who they had worked alongside for a long period. But they raced each other because they trained to do so.

Like in this case. I didn’t know we get to pick and choose when it is acceptable to use photo finish. I wish we’d stop breaking ties at finish at the Olympics then.

I'm expecting tonight's/tomorrow's men's competition to have a rather big number of viewers though after all this drama. Apparently it's again live on the Eurosport Player :yikes:

Well that doesn’t really help me. NBC has the rights, but isn’t showing it on the Olympic Channel (at least as far as I can tell)

Yeah the federation gets to pick and choose when to use photo finish. In this case they chose not to use it because of the rules stating manipulation of finish is a DQ. So I don't see anyone scratching their heads in Olympics about photo finish when there is a DQ as in this situation.

August's test events so far:

Rowing - Venues everyone agrees on are as ugly as shit (even people who apparently never agree with anyone agree about it)
Open water swimming - The water was practically boiling and the only solution seems to be to start at 5am, when the water is....still practically boiling
Equestrian eventing - Didn't follow it that much, but all posts I've seen about anything but the competition itself seemed to be about ugly venues
Triathlon - Totallympics imploding

Boy, I can't wait what happens when the hockey, sailing and basketball gets underway!

Sailing’s good. They competed at a word cup stage there last year. People had a mostly positive opinion of it. For the record, I have a huge problem judging venues a year to go to the games.

When should one do it? I have no idea what the best moment would be, but I can somewhat understand it, since closer to the Games might not leave enough time to work out (serious) issues, whereas further away from the Games might result in a situation where too many things are simply not planned to be ready yet.

Right, we should definitely identify issues now. But calling the venues ugly, unusable, and dangerous during while there’re still be constructed is a little over the top. Corrections can be made rather quickly. Plus, no one will really how the venues look until a few months from now. It’s the Olympics for Christ sakes, the venues will be fine.

Don't forget that the water was also full of shit.

    • I`m very disappointed with this weekend. Only becouse of Ghiotto form I`m happy. Unfortunately, the women's team will not function well if Lollobrigida skips most of the training camps and Fontana starts alternately in short tack and long track. It will end with her not winning any medals here or there, because it`s already clear that it will be very difficult to achieve good results in long track. I hope that she understands this, because in short track she has a real chance of winning medals in the women's relay and the mixed relay but in long track not.
    • Tragic performance of the Italian women's team - last place and probably something bad happened at the start. There are so few starts in the team that it will be a problem to even qualify for the World Championships - 8 best teams. After Lollobrigida's return and Fontana's addition, I was counting on much more, but it seems that there are too few joint trainings. With individual quality, we have no right to lose to the Czechs without Sablikova, or anonymous Korea. And unfortunately this start will count for a lot, because there are only 2 more and our chances of playing at the World Championships are minimal. In my opinion with Fontana going from Short Track to Long Trackand vice versa, we won't be much use in the team. Here great teamwork is needed, not improvisation. As of today, there is very little chance that we will qualify the women's team for the games.
    • men advanced to Division A for the first time since 2018 (when they went 1-8). Don't expect much progress next year
    • Ok, but there we are talking about a person who has parents from different countries. Colturi has nothing to do with Albania.
    • There are few people here from Austria, Switzerland, Norway and Finland.
    • The worst editions in XXI century for us were Vancouver: 5 medals (only 1 gold for Razzoli's on the penultimate day) and Sochi: 8 medals (but no gold). Turin was already a prelude to this bad period, although the number of gold medals was ok. Overall we won fewer medals at home than in 2002 and this was probably the only case in the 21st century when the host country won fewer medals at home than 4 years earlier, either in summer or winter. In general the years 2008-2016 were very bad in our sport, both in summer and winter. Only 2018 in Korea was a slight rebuild + 2 fantastic summer editions in Tokyo and Paris. in Beijing 2022 we won a lot of medals - 17 but only 2 gold (If it weren't for Gogga's injury, I think it would have been 4 gold).
    • Totallympics had  users at one point, but I haven't seen any hanging around in a while.
    • In terms of total medals, yes. In terms of golds, I’d be fine with anywhere from 6-8.   @intoronto you don’t think we’ll do better or at least the same? Bit surprising.
    • Tadeucci was very good and took bronze
    • On the Olympics I don't like to count golds to analyse the performance, I think the best data are the top8 and medals. In both fields I expect a big improvement (obviously not on the 'pure' number, but on the percentage of medal or top8 events)
